I wiped the right corner of my mouth as I tasted blood.

Andy grabbed for his ribs and groaned.

He hobbled back out to the balcony and picked up his beer.

I took a few deep breaths and looked around.

I didn’t need Andy’s blessing.

Just like I didn’t need April’s love.

But I sure as hell wanted it.

Chapter Forty-Two

APRIL

Steph ploppeddown on my desk, sending two folders jumping to the floor.

I looked up at her. “Can I help you?”

“You can help me by just stopping work,” she said.

“No, thanks.”

I looked down again.

Steph held her hand over a pie chart of demographic analysis that dealt with pasta sauce.

That’s right! After taking on a project nobody wanted and doing my best, I arrive back to work only to have my boss throw me this project. As if the world didn’t have choices in the pasta sauce aisle. This one was going to change everything!

“Have you even tried the pasta sauce?” Steph whispered.

“It’s actually very good,” I said. “All natural. No bad oils and stuff. Very homemade like.”

“Ten bucks a jar?”

I slowly eyed Steph.

Her skirt high above her knees.

An innocent looking white cardigan, buttons undone, her undershirt showing off more cleavage than the images in the bra section at a department store.

“Feeling lonely?” I asked.

“We need to get out of here,” she said.

“Sounds like you need to get out of here.”

“That’s it.”

Steph moved from my desk and stuck her head out the door and whistled.

A few seconds later Poppy and Katie appeared.

“Get in here,” Steph ordered.

As soon as they were all in my office, the door was shut and locked.
