“She…”

“Yeah,” I said. “Little comments go a long way, Seb. My bra is too small for her? Oh, well, good for you then. Hope you have back problems when you’re older!”

Seb leaned forward and rubbed his forehead.

I swallowed hard. “That last comment was pretty mean to say. I hope she doesn’t have back problems. I hope nobody ever has back problems because of their boobs.”

Seb jumped up. “What am I supposed to do or say here? Huh? Are you looking for me to say something? Want me to tell you I think your boobs look fine? Is that it? Because I haven’t seen them, April. I’ve seen your nipples. Through your shirt. They look like great nipples. Perfect nipples! Okay? Is that what you want me to say right now?”

Seb grabbed his beer bottle and walked back into the apartment.

I had this habit of making a bad situation worse because all I wanted to do was fix the situation.

I glanced down at myself and smiled.

The worst possible thing to think right then?

Well, at least Seb likes my boobs, right?

I steppedinto the kitchen as Seb poured the wine down the sink.

He left the glasses in the sink and put the bottle of wine away.

Then he got himself another beer.

Not even bothering to ask me if I wanted another.

“Seb, don’t ignore me,” I whispered.

“I’m not ignoring you, April. I’m going to crash in my room, have a drink and go to sleep.”

“No. Don’t do that. Don’t let the night end that way. Please.”

“It’s fine,” he said. “I promise.”

“Don’t promise me anything, Seb.”

He turned to face me.

He looked down at me.

The tower of a man who was once my first real crush.

“I thought you weren’t going to be here so I thought I could have a hookup. Okay? That didn’t work out. So the night is over.”

“Because of my bra? That’s…”

“April, it’s done. Stop.”

“Don’t be mad.”

“I’m not mad at you,” he said. “Okay?”

“But you wanted her.”

“Not for the reasons you’re thinking.”

“What reasons am I thinking?” I asked.
