He groans in pain, but he barely flinches as he tries to stay strong for me.

“Okay. We just need to let this set and you’re done.”

“Okay,” he whimpers.

“I’m sorry, bud. I know this sucks.”

“We’re locked in a concrete cell by God knows who and I’ve got glue holding my head together. I’m not sure saying it sucks is the best description.”

“No, you’re probably right.”

“They’re coming for us, aren’t they?”

“Of course they are. We just need to bide our time and conserve our energy.”

Silence falls between us, the weight of my possible lies pressing down on my shoulders.

Have faith, Alex.

No one is going to forget about us and leave us here.

“I think you’re good to move now,” I say, helping him out and grabbing the blanket the man also left. “Here.” I wrap it around his shoulders before passing him the other bottle of water. “They didn’t bring painkillers.”

“It’s okay.” He sips at the water as I stand in the middle of the freezing cold room, feeling completely out of my depth.

I know there’s nothing I can do, but that’s not good enough.

Rushing to the door, I pull at the handle, slamming my fists against it in the hope of getting some arsehole down here.

If someone’s here and the door’s open, then there’s a chance we can—

“Alex, stop, please,” Zay begs behind me. “We need to wait and conserve our energy, remember?”

His words steal every ounce of my determination, and my arms fall still at my sides as my brow presses against the cold, steel door before me.

Closing my eyes, I whisper, “I remember.”

“Freaking out isn’t going to help. If you really believe they’re coming then you need to have faith.”

“Aren’t I meant to be the older, wiser one?” I ask without turning around.

“We can be a team. Just like me, Blake and Evie are. Teamwork makes the dream work.”

A smile curls at my lips.

“Yeah, bud. It does.” Stepping back from the door, I turn around as he opens the blanket for me to join him. “I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this,” I say after getting settled with him on the cot.

“You make Evie happy, Alex. It’ll be worth it to see her smile like she does when she’s with you.”

EVIE

When I wake again, the pain and exhaustion isn’t quite as all-consuming as the times before.

With my eyes still closed, I think over everything that happened that led me here, allowing myself to experience the fear of being chased through those woods from the safety of this bed.

I was scared. There is no doubting that. But looking back now, only hours after the event, and I already can’t believe I did it. I outran… whoever they were, and I made it back here to my family.
