“Where’s Stefanos and Daemon and—”

“Some big meeting somewhere. It’s just us girls.”

I nod, liking the sound of being surrounded by fierce females who understand all of this.

“The others?”

“Stella and Emmie are at school, but they’re coming as soon as they’re done. Jodie is on her way with more icing sugar.”

“Have you met them already?”

“They were here while you were sleeping.”

“They’re good people.”

“Totally terrifying, but yeah, good people. They’re exactly who you need in your corner right now.”

Those words are the reminder I don’t need that while Alex and Zay might be the ones at the mercy of whoever wants me, I’m still at risk. I’m the one they really want, and one wrong move and I’ll find myself plucked from life as I know it to start over. And something tells me that if they get me, no one will ever find me.

A pained sigh slips past my lips.

“What is it?”

“I really need to shower. I’m all kinds of gross.”

“You can’t get your bandages wet. If those cuts get infected then—”

“Will you help me? Then I’ll come eat.”

“Evie,” she whispers. “You know I’d do anything for you. Gianna left some plastic wrap stuff. We can cover what we can then be careful with the rest.”

Nodding, I step up to the basin to brush my teeth while she goes to find it.

Blakely faffs around, turning the shower on and getting the temperature right before she helps me undress, wraps the bandages that are covering more of my body than I realised, and helps me into the shower.

The warmth of the water on my skin is incredible, but nothing is better than the moment she rinses through my hair. Little twigs and leaves land by my feet, the water dark and murky with a mixture of blood and dirt.

It’s a harsh reminder of what I went through.

“You did so good, babe,” Blakely tells me as if she can read my mind.

“Alex is going to be so proud of you for getting away like you did.”

I suck in a sharp breath.

“What?”

“He might not know,” I whisper. “Wherever he is, he might think they have me too. He might not be trying to get away because he’s trying to rescue me.” My breaths come faster, my chest moving more rapidly as my heart races.

“Whoa, calm down, Evie. Just breathe, yeah?” Placing her hands on my shoulders, she stares into my eyes. “With me. Breathe in, and out. In, and out.”

It takes a few seconds, but I finally get myself under control.

“Trust him, Evie. Trust them.”

I nod, because, what else is there to do?

Everything feels utterly hopeless. And right now, I’m totally useless while the man I love and my little brother are… fuck knows where.
