Please be together, I silently beg once more. Please let Alex be with Zay, keeping him safe and making him smile.

ALEX

The slam of the door jolts us both awake, and when I open my eyes, I find five hooded men staring down at us.

“What do you want?” I bark, sitting up and keeping Zay behind me.

They don’t respond—not that I really expected them to. Instead, three of them reach for me.

“Get the fuck off me,” I grunt, fighting back the best I can with three sets of hands on my body and my head still hazy with sleep.

“Ugh, you little cunt,” one barks when I manage to kick him in the shin.

“No,” Zayden wails behind me.

“Get off him. He has nothing to do with this. Let him go.”

“No can do. Our little Greek friend is exactly where we need him,” one sneers.

“Fuck you, prick.” I spit at him before his eyes drop down my body.

“I’ve heard about your skills, pretty boy. But if it’s all the same, I think I’ll wait for my turn with your little lady.”

The roar that rips from my throat doesn’t sound human.

“You keep your motherfucking hands off my girl.”

I kick and fight, but their grip only tightens before one of them throws a punch that makes the world spin around me.

“Alex,” a little voice cries, bringing me back.

“Let him go. Please, just—”

Darkness cuts off my vision as Zay continues to cry out.

“It’s okay, bud. I won’t let them hurt you. Ooof.” All the air rushes from my lungs and someone punches me so hard in the stomach I fold over, falling to my knees.

“Alex,” he cries.

“I’m okay. I’m okay,” I assure him as I’m hauled from the ground and dragged from the cell we’d been locked in. “Don’t you dare split us up,” I warn as he continues to whimper behind me.

“You’ll do as you’re fucking told,” someone grunts.

Despite trying to find some purpose, my legs continue to flail around as I’m dragged fuck knows where. That is, until a van door opens and I’m thrown inside, quickly followed by Zay.

“Where are you taking us?” I demand, but the only answer I’m met with is the slamming of the door followed by a loud fist on the side of the van that makes Zay scream in fright.

“It’s okay, bud,” I say, ripping the sack off my head before removing his.

“Where are they taking us?” he asks, his eyes wide with fear.

“I’ve no idea.” I wrap my arm around his shoulder and pull him close.

“They’re not taking us home, are they?”

“I highly doubt it,” I mutter as the engine comes to life and the van takes off.
