The drive is bumpy as hell. My head bounces off the side of the van more than once, making me see stars while Zay trembles against me.

“They’re never going to find us if they keep moving us.”

“It might be a trick. We might end back up in the exact same place,” I say, thinking about some of the games we use to disorientate people.

“Really? Seems like a lot of effort.”

“Anything could be happening. Keep an open mind.”

“I’m trying.”

I’ve no idea how much time passes before the van finally pulls to a stop and the back door is ripped open, allowing some sunlight in before our heads are covered once more and we’re dragged back out.

It soon becomes obvious that I was wrong about them throwing us back into the same cold, dark cell, because the one we find ourselves in once we’re left alone again is even more depressing.

There’s a leak above us somewhere, which results in a river of water running down the wall that also has mould growing out of it. The floor is disgusting, and this time, there’s no uncomfortable cot to sit on or sleep in. There is nothing.

“I guess we shouldn’t have hated on the first place so much, huh?” Zay asks, looking around with his arms wrapped around himself and his top lip curled up in disgust. “I didn’t think there was anywhere worse than Lovell. Guess I was wrong. What is that for?” he asks, looking up at a heavy chain I hadn’t seen hanging from the ceiling. “Oh, and those?”

My eyes find the two large hooks screwed into the old concrete wall, and I swallow nervously.

“Umm…” I rub the back of my neck, not wanting to explain to an innocent child that they could well both be used to torture us.

“This place isn’t going to be enjoyable, is it?”

“No, it’s not.”

“Do we really just have to sit and wait for them to find us?”

“Did you have a better idea?” I ask, genuinely interested in what he’s thinking about all of this.

“You any good at digging through concrete with your hands?”

“Sadly not. You?”

He shakes his head and takes another step into the gloomy room.

“They’re going to come for us soon. We can do this.” His voice might be full of confidence, but when he looks back, I see the truth in his eyes, and it damn near kills me.

Evie is relying on me to protect him the best way I can, and right now, I can’t help but feel like I’m failing.

We huddle in the corner, and with nothing else to do, we just wait.

The second the sliding of a bolt echoes through the silence, I jump to my feet, keeping Zay behind me when he follows suit.

My body trembles with the need for food. The one bottle of water we’ve had hasn’t really cut it.

The door swings open and I grit my teeth, ready to go head-to-head with these pricks.

“Alexander Deimos, I must say, it’s such a privilege to have you staying with us,” the tallest of the men who step into the small room says, moving ahead of the others. “It really is a pleasure to welcome you to our sanctuary.”

“I can’t say I’m overly enjoying it, to be honest,” I mutter.

He studies me from behind his mask. Fucking pussies. If they were brave, they’d show their faces, but instead, they’re standing before me like fucking mice, ready to run away and hide.

It’s how I know they won’t win.
