But it’s pointless. No one listens to me.

Evie, I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.

With half the men holding my weight, the others strap me to the cross before stepping away and leaving me more helpless than I’ve ever been in my life.

My chest heaves as the pain saturates my body. The cuts across my back rub against the wooden frame and the straps dig into my skin. It’s not going to take long for them to cut through, leaving me hanging here, bleeding out for their sick pleasure.

Ignoring every set of eyes locked on me, I keep my gaze on Zay’s, silently promising him that everything is going to be okay.

They’re going to come.

They’re going to come.

They have to fucking come, because I refuse to bow out like this. I refuse to allow him to watch as they do whatever the fuck it is they’ve planned to do with me.

Footsteps echo through the space as all the masked men back away.

Foreboding washes over me as the echoing steps get louder and the tension amongst the men before me seems to crackle with the intensity of an incoming storm.

After what feels like an eternity, two dark figures emerge from the shadows.

The second I clock one of their identities, a bitter laugh tumbles from my lips.

“Ah, good. You remember my business partner,” the man from the video sneers.

“Yeah. Only the last time I saw him, he was bleeding out at my feet,” I spit, remembering all too well how it felt to get the opportunity to throw my fist into his face for a second time in only a few months. “I’m disappointed to see you’ve healed so well.”

Grant steps forward, joining the first man with nothing but pure hatred etched into every inch of his still slightly bruised face as he stares up at me.

“Alexander Deimos, how wonderful it is to see you again. I would shake your hand, put all that bullshit behind us, but it seems you’re incapable to do so right now.”

The need to ask him what the fuck he wants is right on the tip of my tongue. But I already know the answer.

Revenge.

Suddenly, everything is starting to make so much sense.

Not only did I steal their newest, most precious purchase, but I humiliated Grant. Twice.

And I’m not even fucking sorry for it.

He deserved it. The only thing I regret is that I didn’t put him in the ground.

If I had, then this could have all been avoided.

“Let him go,” I demand again, jerking my chin in Zay’s direction once more.

“Who, the kid?” Grant snarls. “I don’t think so. I believe Zayden needs to be here to learn a very important lesson.”

“He’s already learned enough. Now let him go before you fuck up the rest of his life just like you have thousands of other innocent people.”

He tsks before beginning to pace before me.

“We don’t deal with people who have lives that can be fucked up any more than they already are,” he confesses like he’s actually doing people a fucking favour by putting them up for sale and letting them go for the highest price.

“Bullshit,” I bark. “Evie’s life was never fucked up. She has a loving family. People who care about her. A future, you sick fuck.”

“Ah, alas. Evie Moore was special,” he muses. “I knew from the moment I saw her photo that she was going to be worth so much more than all the rest.”
