The way he paused when I kissed him.

My eyes find Calli’s once more as reality slams into me.

She’s right. I was just too relieved and exhausted to see it.

“They’re twins. Identical twins,” Calli explains.

I think back to the things Alex told me about his brother. I remember him saying they’re as much the same as they are different. I didn’t think much of it at the time, because that statement could be used to describe me and Blake. But now, it makes so much more sense.

“I’m so sorry,” I whisper, feeling the cringe all the way down to my toes.

“It’s okay. I told him to stop being an idiot and tell you before you bumped into him.”

“Why didn’t he?” Blake asks, still looking as fragile as she was when I woke.

“Because he’s a frigging idiot?” Calli responds without missing a beat.

Dropping my gaze, my eyes land on a white bandage that’s wrapped around my upper arm where one of my worst cuts was.

“Gianna is downstairs,” Calli tells me. “She did the best she could to patch you up while you slept.”

Embarrassment makes my cheeks burn red as I think back to what happened last time I was in a bed with that woman.

Shaking that memory away, I focus on the issue at hand.

“So, where is he?”

It might be a little presumptuous, but I’m lying here after spending hours running through the woods away from God knows who now wrapped up in bandages. I’d have put any money on him being here and refusing to leave my side. But… he’s nowhere to be seen.

He will have been out looking for me. Right?

He’ll have come home, alerted everyone, and they’d have been trying to find me.

They—

“He was ambushed when he got back to the house, Evie. They were waiting for him.”

All the air rushes out of my lungs as Calli delivers that devastating blow, her eyes swimming with tears.

“No,” I cry.

I refused to believe that a guy as well trained as Alex would have been overpowered by whoever that was and—

A scream rips through the air, and it’s not until both Blake and Calli squeeze my hands that I realise it came from me.

“They have him?” I ask weakly.

“We believe so.”

“You believe so?” I echo. “Why haven’t the guys gone storming in to get him back? I need him, Calli. I need him. I—” I break down, falling into my sister’s arms as she sobs right alongside me.

“They will get him, Evie. I promise you. Daemon and the guys will do whatever they have to do to bring him back to you. You just have to trust them even if it feels like you want to do the opposite.”

“It’s not just Alex,” Blake whispers brokenly in my ear, making ice flood through my body.

It takes all my strength, but I manage to push her from our embrace so I can look into her eyes.

“What do you mean, it’s not just Alex.” My heart races so hard it makes my head spin.
