“I’ve been busy,” Daemon mumbles.

“So busy you couldn’t hang out with your big brother? It’s Christmas, man.”

“Ho Ho Ho,” he deadpans, making my eyes roll so hard they hurt.

Okay, so I might be being a little dramatic. We spent Christmas day with Mum and he almost looked like he enjoyed it. But since then, he’s just checked out.

I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s how my brother works, it’s how he’s been for years. But the point of being a twin is that there’s always someone there, isn’t it?

It’s how it was when we were little kids. But the older we’ve got, the more Daemon pulled away from us.

I hate it. I hate that he thinks he doesn’t fit in. That he feels like he needs to hide everything he’s been through. If there is anyone out there who understands the training we’ve endured, then it’s our friends. But he doesn’t even trust them enough to let them see the real him.

I just wish he’d give someone a chance. Let someone in. Anyone.

“You’re hilarious,” I deadpan as I reach for a pair of trousers and a shirt for Dad’s poker night.

He hasn’t had one since the beginning of the month, and I was looking forward to another until I found all our friends are too busy with other shit to attend. I’m not saying it’ll be bad with just me and D, but it’s harder to cause trouble when only two of us are here. Especially when he’ll spend most of his time hiding.

“So what did Dad threaten you with to get you here?” I ask, pulling my clothes on.

“What makes you say I was blackmailed? How about, I just want to spend time with you?” He tips his head to the side and does his best to look sweet and innocent.

As if I’m going to fucking fall for that.

“Yeah, nice try. What was it?”

He breaks our connection, preferring to look down at his lap for a beat. It’s all the answer I need.

“Forget it. I don’t need details. Just… I dunno, stay longer than an hour, maybe. Who knows, one of the girls tonight might just capture your attention.”

“Doubtful,” he scoffs, slumping lower in my chair.

“What the fuck is up with that? You haven’t hooked up with anyone since… Fuck, I don’t know when but it was before Halloween.”

He shrugs. “Dunno. Just not feeling it, I guess.”

“Not feeling it? Since fucking when?”

“Since now. What the fuck is with all the questions? When was the last time you got your dick wet?”

“Boxing day,” I answer without having to think about it.

“Of course you did,” he mutters.

“What? I went out with Nico. We hooked up with these couple of uni chicks. They were hot, man. Kinky as fuck.”

“Spare me the details.”

“You’re just jealous. I don’t give a shit what you say, there is no way your own hand is any kind of replacement for real pussy.”

“Did I try arguing that point?” he states, lifting a brow. “Are you done? I need a fucking drink.”

Pushing from my chair, he strides across the room.

“Yeah, hang on,” I mutter, rushing back into the bathroom to run some wax through my hair. “Okay, let’s go.”

“Watch out, ladies. Alex Deimos is on the prowl,” Daemon deadpans as I follow him out of the room. “Prick,” he mutters when I slap him around the back of the head.
