“So then, what’s the problem, besides the distraction that can be taken care of with a solid vibrator?” Jamie asked, leaning against the couch cushions.

I stalled for time, munching on a handful of popcorn. I was going to have to sign an NDA about it, but I didn’t have to tell Jamie all the details.

“It’s just that they want me to do something extra, like a little part-time gig on top of my job,” I said. “And the money is insanely good. But I’m not sure I’ll be good at it.”

Jamie snorted. “Who cares if you’re good at it right off the bet? They’re offering it right to you, and the money’s good. You can get back to where you were before Dane drained you dry.”

I sighed through my nose, chewing for a while to gather my thoughts. “I know you’re right, but that doesn’t mean that I can do it.”

“Brooke, what could they possibly have you do that makes you this worried?” Jamie’s eyes narrowed. “Are they asking you to do anything sketchy?”

“No!” I blurted, even though the undercover work actually seemed kind of sketchy. “It’s just outside of my skill set.”

“You’re smart, though, and you’re more than capable of learning. You have a great attitude, too.” Jamie shrugged and reached toward my popcorn. I handed it over. “So just go for it if the money’s that good. You’ll get your salary, plus at least one paycheck.”

She was right. Maybe it was going to be a disaster where I’d only work one night. But I’d get paid for it and use that extra cash toward my debt.

I bit my bottom lip. My salary was enough to cover my expenses, but being able to dig myself out of this debt hole without cutting too much from my budget sounded amazing. Amazing enough to throw away any sense and become a freaking undercover agent spying on a crime ring.

“Okay. You have a point,” I said, letting out a long breath. “I might as well do it.”

CHAPTER5

Chase

Brooke was the first person I saw when I walked into the office. Warmth spread across my chest and down to my cock, just as it did yesterday, as I took in her curvy form standing in front of the coffee machine. Today, she was wearing a similar outfit, a business-appropriate blouse and a pencil skirt, but fuck, her body. She’d catch my eye wearing literally anything… or nothing at all.

I nodded hello to her and went to my office, the back of my neck heating. I slipped my hand into my pocket to conceal my slight hard-on. It took me several minutes to bring myself back to equilibrium. How long had it been since I’d been attracted to a woman so intensely? I hadn’t even been on a date since my fiancé dumped me three years ago. That breakup was hell and put me off women—aside from meaningless one-night stands to keep me sane—until now.

But she was our assistant. Choosing her to lust after was ridiculous, so I had to set those feelings aside. Somehow.

I turned on my computer, then went out to get myself some coffee. I kept my eyes off of Brooke as I passed, but made eye contact with her on my way back. Those green eyes of hers were so potent, almost the same shade as leaves in spring.

“Have you considered our conversation from last night?” I said, keeping my voice as neutral as possible despite the lust coursing through my veins.

“I have.” Her cheeks flushed a lovely pink, and she twisted her pen in between her fingers.

“Let’s talk about it in my office. Hunter and Lucas should be in shortly.”

She got up and followed me, but I gestured for her to walk into my office first. I told myself that I was doing it to be a gentleman, but I got a nice look at her ass before I shut the door and went to my side of my desk. Her soft, rounded hips and ass looked so touchable. Imagining how she felt under my hands had to remain a fantasy.

“I’ll do it,” she said the moment I sat down.

“Great.” Tension that had been sitting as a knot in my gut loosened, just a little bit.

I had been the one who noticed the criminals after testing out some new program I’d created. I combined facial recognition technology with criminal databases, so we knew if anyone who was in the casino was known for anything nefarious. I thought we’d pick up maybe one or two people known for running scams, not a bunch of dangerous assholes fresh out of prison.

“But just so you know,” Brooke said, running her hands down her thighs. “I might not be good at it.”

Someone knocked on the door, and I told them to come in. Lucas and Hunter came in, shutting the door. My office was big, but all three of us with Brooke inside made me feel very close to her, like someone had taken a little of the air out of the room.

“So, you have an answer?” Hunter asked brusquely.

Brooke’s eyes widened. “Um, yes.” She folded her hands together on her lap. “I’ll do it, but I was just warning Chase that I might not be good at it.”

“You just have to be yourself,” Lucas said, resting a hand on the back of her seat. She looked up at him, almost starry-eyed. “You’re smart and friendly. Think about it—everyone’s eavesdropped on a conversation in a bar or restaurant. Just think of it like that, but with a little more detail. It’s not like you’ll have to pretend you’re not listening. You’re there to listen. Even something mundane might give us what we need to know.”

Brooke bit her plush bottom lip. “So, what will a night look like? Should I go downstairs after work?”
