“Most of the criminals tend to come around nine,” I said, waking up my computer to look at my data. “So you could go home and get some rest, since they usually stay around until at least one in the morning. I know it’s late, so we won’t have you stay out every single night.”

“That doesn’t sound too bad if I don’t have to do it every night,” she said. “What will I wear, though? I need to get the black dress that the dealers wear, right?”

All the ideas I had for what she’d wear flashed into my head, and all of them were mostly inappropriate. I swallowed. Her being attractive to our targets was important, but she was already stunning. She didn’t need to work that hard in that regard.

“We’ll buy you a dress,” Hunter said. “It doesn’t have to be a specific one—just a nice black dress, no shorter than an inch above the knee. Heels.”

“Should I get something kind of…” Brooke gestured vaguely in the shape of a woman. “Sexy?”

Lucas and I exchanged a glance, my mouth going dry at the thought of Brooke fully dressed up in a body-hugging dress and sky-high heels. What was wrong with me? I usually held myself together better than this around women, and I always had. I was always able to “out-logic” the caveman inside of me, but now that side of me was fighting to be let out.

“You know, to lure them in or something. Get them to let their guard down?” Brooke added, her face flushing. “Like a honeypot.”

“Nothing too overt,” Hunter finally said. “Something you’d wear on a date you were moderately excited about.”

She snorted to herself. “Been a while since I had one of those.”

So she was single? Not that it mattered. She was our assistant. Even thinking about touching her was an awful idea. I wondered how many times I’d have to tell myself that before I’d believe it?

“Well, whatever you’d wear on a date with a guy who wasn’t a tool.” Lucas pulled his wallet out of his pocket and fished out his corporate card. “You can go shopping at lunch at some point this week.”

“Thank you.” She looked down at the card. “What price range should I stay in?”

“There’s no limit. Get a dress for every day of the week if you want. Shoes, too.” Lucas put his wallet back in his pocket. “Jewelry, even.”

“No limit?” Brooke blinked.

“No limit.” Lucas smiled. “Seriously, how much could you spend on black dresses and shoes?”

“Um, a ton. Not that I would, but thank you. I’ll just get a few options so you can approve them. I don’t want to tip them off because I don’t want to screw this up.” She put the card in the pocket of her blouse. “Thank you. You really didn’t have to do this for me.”

Her cheeks flushed, as if she wasn’t used to people doing nice things for her. I hated that no one had, but also, I was glad we were one of the first to treat her the way she should be treated.

“Don’t worry about it. I have a few recording devices for you to wear—subtle ones that you can clip onto your dress like a piece of jewelry,” I said. I opened the drawer to my desk and pulled out a golden, decorative pin shaped like a sun. The dark, bead-looking object in the middle was actually a small camera, surrounded by golden spokes. “This has a recording device in it, so we’ll be able to see what you see. You literally just have to pin it on, but the placement needs to be right. I have an earpiece, so you can talk to us, too.”

“Oh, cool.” She leaned over to take a closer look at the pin, making her blouse shift. I caught a glimpse of her lacy black bra and let myself look until she turned her attention back to me. “But what if I’m there, and they aren’t saying anything? How do I get them to talk about whatever they’re up to?”

Hunter leaned against the wall, crossing his arms over his chest. “You don’t need to do much. You can sit back and be friendly. Act clueless, and they won’t have any qualms about talking in front of you.”

“That’s a good strategy,” I said. “If you act too astute, they won’t feel free to talk about anything.”

“So basically, just be a beautiful, brainless doll?” Brooke asked with a smirk. “The kind who men don’t even consider as an equal.”

“Well, shit, when you put it that way, it sounds really bad.” Lucas laughed.

“But unfortunately, that’s how they might operate, based on what we’ve seen,” I said. “You should try that at first.”

Brooke considered our words again, her brows furrowing. The more we talked about it, the surer I was about the plan going at least somewhat smoothly. But what if she changed her mind?

“But what about the games? I only know how to play blackjack,” she asked. A question in the right direction.

“So you’ll be on the blackjack tables,” Hunter said. “We’ll give you a three-day crash course in being a blackjack dealer, also paid, so you won’t have to worry about making any mistakes on that front. And it’s also not as complicated as some of the other games, so you won’t have to split your attention.”

“I can do that.” Brooke nodded, surer than she was before. “Or at least I feel like I can.”

“How about you come up to my penthouse around eight on your first night, so I can help you get set up with the recording device and help you pick which dress is best?” Lucas asked. “And help you settle your nerves? I know you’ve got this, but I figure a little help wouldn’t hurt.”

I glanced at Lucas, my eyebrow going up. What was he playing at? Seeing his attraction to her was obvious. Having her alone with him in his penthouse seemed like a recipe for something going on that shouldn’t.
