I blinked at him. “Wow.”Who was this man sitting at my grumpy boss’s desk?

“What is it?” he asked, when I continued to stare in bewilderment.

“Nothing. I just…” I hesitated, not wanting to say anything that would ruin his apparent good mood. “You’re just not as short with me as you usually are.”

He shrugged. “I guess that I’m just less frustrated and tense today.”

“Do you mean sexually frustrated?” The words just slipped out.

It felt so strange to talk about such a thing with my boss in his office like this. It was forbidden, which was probably why it was so exciting. Was there any way he would fulfill my kinky fantasy and take me here right at his desk?

Logan just smirked in response to my question, which was answer enough. “You should probably get back to work.”

He was right, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what he said as I sat back down at my desk. Was he so irritable because he didn’t get laid enough? No that couldn’t have been it. Did it have something to do with me, specifically?

These thoughts whirled in my mind, taking up too much of my time. That was, until another distraction came along.

A shadow fell over me, and I looked up to find myself staring at Logan’s mother. She had never come into the office before, so I looked at her in confusion.

“Uh, hi, Mrs. Reid—”

“I think we can be less formal than that,” she interrupted. There was a smile on her face, which I supposed was a good thing, considering the speculative looks she’d been throwing at me when we first met. “We’re going to be family soon. You can call me Jacquie.”

“Okay, Jacquie.” I pasted on a smile. “If you want to see Logan, he’s free until he takes a conference call in twenty minutes.”

“Actually, I came to see you.”

“Why?” I asked with wide eyes, because any reason that came to mind for her visit felt suspect. Then, I realized that might seem rude, so I cleared my throat and said a bit more enthusiastically. “I mean…that’s nice.”

Jesus, why was I being so awkward? Why did I care what this woman thought of me?

She casually set her designer bag on my desk. “Logan called this morning to tell me about the plan for the weekend, so I wanted to come and talk to you.”

“This weekend?” I echoed.

Her perfectly plucked brow furrowed as she looked at me in confusion. “The wedding, dear. It’s this Saturday, right?”

“Oh! Right.” I resisted the urge to face palm myself. “That’s right.”

I felt flustered as I realized that I wasn’t even thinking about the wedding because the enormity of my upcoming fake marriage had somehow been overshadowed by me actually sleeping with my fiancé,my boss.

That was not to even mention my own emotional entanglement with Logan that I was still trying to sort through.

Now, Jacquie was looking at me like I was crazy, and I couldn’t blame her.

“Mom?” Logan’s voice came from behind Jacquie, and we both looked in that direction to see him standing in the doorway. “What are you doing here?”

“I was just about to whisk away my soon-to-be daughter-in-law.”

“What?” I asked, not sure I liked the sound of that.

“Well, when I talked to Logan this morning, he mentioned that you hadn’t picked out a dress yet,” she said, her lips pursed. “I’m not sure why you guys are in such a hurry…unless I’m going to be a grandma?”

“Oh, my God, No!” I said, the word coming out more forcefully than I intended.

“We just want to be married, Mom,” Logan added with a sigh. “We don’t need a long engagement and no, we’re not pregnant.”

“Okay, fine.” She waved a hand dismissively in the air. “You’ll have to buy off the rack, and there’s not even time to have alterations made, so it’ll have to be a perfect fit, but I’ve always liked a challenge.”
