“Why the fuck not? He isn’t busy-”

“He’s in the infirmary, there was a fight, something happened, just now-”

Ash shot up. “What?”

Colt stood, too. “Ash, keep cool. Ryan, what did the guard say?”

Ryan looked between them both. “Said Nix is banged up pretty bad. Said Nix is unconscious, said he’s not accepting any visitors right now-”

“Fuck,” Colt said, eying Ash warily.

Ash stood and felt like his world was ending. For the first time in his life, he felt responsible. It rocked his core. Worry daggered through him.

“What do I do Colt?” Ash felt sick and looked to Colt. Colt’s pale face and doomed expression met Ash and sent him spiraling down that big black hole of panic again. “What the fuck do I do?”

Nix felt sick.He had been sick, twice. But he felt sick again. It was the concussion, the nurse had said. And the fact he’d been punched and kicked in the stomach multiple times.

He tipped his head back into the pillows. They were softer than the ones in his bunk at least. His body hurt. Too much to feel pleasurable now. He eyed the IV in his arm. The drip beside the bed. Yeah ‘cause he wouldn’t be eating or drinking anything today. It would hurt to swallow.

One of the guards swaggered in. He eyed up Nix like a piece of meat, and then checked to see if anyone was behind him.

Fuck. The ward was empty. No other patients, no staff. Nix took a painful breath in and braced himself.

“I heard Nixy took a beating for his boyfriend,” the guard jeered.

Nix obviously was not going down without a fight.

“Fuck off.”

“Ooh, lover’s tiff?”

Nix frowned. “We’re not…he’s not my boyfriend-”

“You his brother now, hmm? Part of this big, bad Black Coyotes MC?”

Nix tried to roll his eyes but it hurt. “No, I-”

“Can you even ride a bike?”

“Yes, but-”

“Black Coyotes MC didn’t just fuck over Ramon’s family, you know that?”

Nix took a slow breath in and let it out again, dread creeping up his spine.

“Fucked over my brother, too.”

“I don’t think that has anything to do with Ash-”

“So has Ash told you his good news?”

Nix knew it was bait. He watched it dangle in front of his nose. This was all to get a rise out of him. He tried to tell himself to ignore it. To just leave it. He wasn’t a mongrel. He wasn’t the mutt they made him out to be.

He simmered silently in the bed, wishing looks could kill.

“He’s been up to visit, right?”

Again, Nix knew it was just more bait. Nix kept silent. No, Ash hadn’t been up, and no, Nix hadn’t heard whatever good news it was that Ash had. But Nix knew Ash would come and visit when he could. Right? If he hadn’t come yet, there would be a good reason behind it… right? Because Ash cared about Nix, right? Nix wasn’t just a hole to fuck for Ash… right?
