“Did you know he’s a black belt in karate?” the nurse said, sounding surprised.

“Yeah,” Nix huffed.

“He kicked them all to shit.”

Nix frowned. “So why aren’t Ramon’s gang in here, then, getting treated, if they got the shit kicked out of them?”

The nurse’s face went serious. “Sweetie, what Ash did to them… we couldn’t treat here, an ambulance had to come from Holy Cross Hospital-”

“Fuck.”

“So he’s in solitary for a while. Probably until they get him out.”

Nix chewed his bottom lip. “So is it likely to affect his release, him being in solitary for the fight?”

The nurse immediately shook her head. “No Nix, the Black Coyotes are serious players in the state, they hold huge sway, politically, and Ash is their right hand man-”

Nix felt immediately pretty stupid. “I’m not from around here, I didn’t realize…”

The nurse perched on the end of his bed. “My sister was seeing one of the Black Coyotes for a bit. Their club has a long history, set up in the post-Vietnam war era, of course. They controlled the drugs and guns in the state, coming in from Mexico. They were huge. Massive trains up and down the highway, a hundred bikes on the road at the same time, sometimes…”

Nix’s mouth fell open.

“But then some deal went wrong, I don’t know what happened, my sister wasn’t dating that guy anymore. One of the leaders died, or something, some went to prison, they all kind of… disappeared… some jumped up street gang carried their name for a bit but didn’t do too much except steal from some of the other gangs in the area which caused a lot of friction-”

Puzzle pieces fell into place in Nix’s head. “Ramon’s family-”

“Yes probably,” the nurse nodded. “But then their old Prez returned, got out of prison, burned the old clubhouse down apparently-”

That was the guy that Ash was always bleating on about, Colt.

“His wife shot the gang leader, point blank they said-”

Fuck, Nix made a mental note to never get on the wrong side of Colt’s ol’ lady.

“Started fresh, a new MC now, flush with cash and they are gaining power again across Northern California. Getting the drugs out of the state, cleaning up the streets…”

“And, er… this new Prez, and his wife… they didn’t face any legal repercussions?”

The nurse laughed. “You didn’t hear me, Nix? The mayor herself ratified their presence in the state. Takes their business to the top of the food chain, hell, the governor of California himself approves of the Black Coyotes, I can tell you…”

Nix rested his head back. Well, he wasn’t too proud to admit it when he had to eat humble pie. Turns out that cocky little bastard had good reason to be cocky after all.

Nix wokeup later that night with a start. He often woke quickly these days, confused about where he was. He was used to the immediate happy rush of relief when he realized he was alone with Ash in their quiet, cozy cell.

Not this evening. Nix woke up to a hand clamped over his mouth and something sharp under his neck.

“Umph.” He made a noise anyway, on the off chance that someone could hear him. Fuck, security in this ward was not high.

“Not a fucking peep,” came a voice from next to him. He didn’t recognize it. But he had lots of enemies now. The whole of D Block, Ramon’s group, the guards… they could pay anyone to come and do this kind of shit to him.

“Message for you.”

Nix frowned and continued to puff his breath in and out of his nose.

“Infiltrate the Black Coyotes as a plant. Pretend you’re one of them, get all cozy with them, then, when we send a signal, you let us into their compound, you tell us where all their money is, and you help us kill them all. If you tell Ash about this, we’ll slit his throat. If you tell anyone about this, we’ll slit your throat and all of their throats. You’ll get protection in here, and when you’re out, you’ll join Ramon’s group. You got that pretty boy?”

Nix tried to speak. It was a last ditch attempt at making any sense from this.
