“Ah, fucking save it, Prez,” Lyle said the title mockingly.

Colt stomped forward and grabbed Lyle by the lapels of his cut.

“You know that Max can’t ride! What the hell were you thinking?” Colt roared, shaking Lyle.

Ash bit his lip. Fuck. What Lyle had done was reckless, Nix had had a near miss. But Ash had never seen Lyle looking so happy. His heart bled for the guy. He had no luck at all. Just wrong timing, unfortunate that everyone was here to see and hear.

“Ah, shit, Ash,” Nix muttered beside him.

“I know,” Ash hissed back.

“What do we do…” Nix fixed Ash a gaze. Nix’s signature gaze, blue eyes with the amber center. Ash could tell, Nix was feeling the same unexpected pull that Ash was, too. Fuck, Ash would have been first in line to tell Lyle to fuck off. He endangered lives by helping Max with this stunt. But fuck, the other night had been… the hottest thing of Ash’s life. Sharing a bed with Lyle and Penny, while he and Nix… It wasn’t just mind-blowing sex, he liked the company, he liked having them there, feeling like a little pack of wolves, feeling like he’d found… a family. He had a home within a home. Smaller than the MC but bigger than the embrace of Nix. Ash wasn’t prepared to stand by while it was ripped away from him, while it turned into a one time thing.

Ash’s brain tried to think his way to a win-win scenario. Because Lyle wasn’t being kicked out of the MC today. Not on Ash’s watch. And Ash always got what he wanted.

“I’m going to get Penny, you do whatever you can to stall things-”

“Yeah,” Nix breathed out, swinging his leg over his bike.

“Lyle, I already have you off runs because you’re a fucking drunk liability. I already have you receiving zero wages working as a fucking errand boy for Jared’s guys. I already have you on a booze limit that somehow doesn’t seem to be working ‘cause you’re still getting drunk every night-”

“Prez, the kid just wanted some fun-”

“Oh yeah, is dying part of that fun-”

“I’m fucking dying anyway-” Max butted in, scowling daggers at the floor.

“I’m not even getting started yet on you, Max, so you can fucking wait your turn because I’ve almost had enough of your shit, too!” Colt raged.

Max dropped his head, silent anger radiating off him.

Lyle cleared his throat. “Look, I’ve got a kid about Max’s age, okay, I had it under control-”

“Pah, when was the last time you saw that kid then? Hmm? ‘Cause I sure as hell haven’t seen you inviting anyone over to visit-”

“Fuck off, it’s their Ma… we were young, we were still in high school when we… then she went back to Puerto Rico so I could hardly… anyway, the point is, I know what I’m doing with this, I’m not drunk right now, we were just having some fun-”

“I just don’t believe it when you say you haven’t been drinking, Lyle.” Colt shook his head.

Lyle muttered a curse and kicked the floor. “And what about Nix? Huh? Could have crashed, wiped him off his bike!”

Ash was about to elbow Nix but Nix already recognized his cue.

“Yeah, fucking dick!” Nix marched over and squared up to Lyle, grabbing him off Colt like Lyle was a misbehaving toddler.

Ash hesitated. He could kick start his bike and swing over to Penny’s offices. He knew where she worked. He’d be back in twenty minutes. But he wanted to stay to see what went down. They had to save Lyle. Because the guy clearly needed help. Those night terrors Ash had to help Penny with… Ash felt he’d failed. Lyle was supposed to be a brother of the MC, and Ash had just let him slide back into addiction with contempt and mockery. He had no idea Lyle was suffering so much. He had seen Lyle drinking again but hadn’t stopped to think how and where he was getting the alcohol from. Or why. Ash had seen Lyle as an annoying thorn in the MC’s side. Lyle had kept his head down and been quiet as fuck when Ash had first come out. Lyle had been demoted to prospect, and had done everything asked of him. He’d been upgraded for good behavior, but after that incident with Phantom, where they had taken the Demonios member hostage and tried to get information out of him… yeah, that seemed to have unlocked Lyle’s demons. And Ash felt he had just sat by and watched them pour out of the cage that Lyle had been straining to hold closed. Ash should have done more. He should have helped.

Colt murderously looked on while Nix loomed over Lyle, doing a good job of being the badass intimidating Doberman Nix could be. Before Ash tamed him and turned him into a lap cat. Ash cracked his neck. This was tense.

Colt spoke, “I’m going to put it to a vote-”

Lyle rolled his eyes. “If I’m out, I’m out, just say it, Colt-”

“You call me, Prez!” Colt boomed.

Lyle hissed like a cat that had had their tail stepped on. “Then act like fucking Prez! You fed up with me, kick me out! Just make the fucking decision! Put me out of my misery!”

Colt’s eyes widened. “We’re carrying your weight Lyle-”
