“You can be the one to tell the other’s then, that because of you and your fucked up inability to do as you’re fucking told-”

“Colt, I’ve got shit to do today, anything else you want to yell at me about or can I go?”

“No, you can’t fucking go yet, and top of your list of things to do is call me your fucking Prez-”

“Right… Prez,” Lyle mocked.

“-and second on your list of things to do today is to kindly escort Penny here off the premises and ensure she has all her stuff. She isn’t coming back.”

Penny’s mouth fell open.

Lyle now sat forward. “I beg your pardon? I must have gone deaf because it fucking sounded to me like you said some shit about my woman not being allowed back-”

“You heard, Lyle, no sweetbutts.”

Lyle simply stared murderously back at Colt.

Penny cleared her throat. “I’m not a sweetbutt,” she said, her voice sounding small, shaky. Well she was shaky.

Colt turned to her, softer but just as firm. “I’m sorry darling, I don’t mean any offense, but we really can’t have women coming in, bringing booze-”

“I don’t bring him booze-” Penny stuttered.

“You just insulted my woman,” Lyle said slowly.

Colt flicked his gaze back to Lyle.

“First, she’s not your woman, is she, Lyle?”

“You just insulted-” Lyle repeated but Colt was losing his temper now, too.

“Nix and Ash have fucked her, too, haven’t they? And I heard you’ve joined in and watched. How can she be your woman, Lyle? Huh? What you wanna do with Ash and Nix isn’t my business but-”

“I never brought him alcohol, I wouldn’t do that… Lyle is doing so much better-” Penny found herself talking fast, trying to defuse the situation.

“I’m not gay, if that’s what you think-”

“I wouldn’t care if you were-” Colt shrugged, waving his hand as if trying to wave Lyle’s counter away, too.

“But I’m not-”

“Lyle, that’s not the fucking issue here! The issue is the sweetbutts were passing you hard liquor. So they go. End of story. Penny is a sweetbutt-”

“I’m not a sweetbutt-”

Colt gave her a half-smile. “You’ve fucked half the club, darling, that’s a sweetbutt!” He turned back to Lyle.

Lyle pursed his lips. “Doesn’t it count for anything? How I feel? How I… fuck, I want Penny…”

Colt shook his head. “Lyle, what you want isn’t worth shit 'round here, ‘cause you aren’t worth shit 'round here-”

Penny flinched. Colt was being harsh, he was playing tough love. Penny could see that with her head. But she could also see the doubt seeping into Lyle’s midnight black eyes. The hurt. And when Lyle felt hurt, he hurt himself more. His shoulders sagged. Penny could see him slipping. Slipping.

Penny wouldn’t let him fall.

“No.” She stood up.

Colt stared at her. “What?”
