“Scout, we need to get Skyler, your mother, and you into a safe house.” I push toward her and she holds a hand up.

“Clear the room,” she orders. River and Reaper stand and start to move out, but Dylan stays back.

“Go,” I tell him.

As soon as the door is closed, I’m on her. I take her mouth in a deep kiss, hoping I can get her agreeable if I get her into a sexual fog. She pulls back and I take in her swollen lips.

“Sunshine, I’m not going to let anything happen to you.” I don’t give her the words that I should because I don’t want to scare her off.

“You need to leave. I’m safe here. I have my sisters to protect us.”

“We are not done with this.”

I move toward the door, pissed that I can’t convince her to come with me. As I move out of the office, I see Dylan talking to Frenchie. They met when Scout got hurt in Palmer. He reaches out to touch her and she steps back.

“Butler,” I call his name.

We return to the SUV and pull out. I contemplate how to get her to come home with me or to a safe house.

“You know she’s not going to accept you completely until you accept her.” Dylan’s voice breaks me from my thoughts.

“What?” I turn my eye from the road and toward him before I turn back. We haven’t even climbed Hagelberger yet.

“You accept that you both were tricked. You accept your daughter.” It’s not a question, but I still growl at him.

“Fuck yes, I accept those.”

“But do you accept who she is now? She’s an extremely talented mechanic and businesswoman. She’s been a part of the Handmaidens for years and has never been arrested or even investigated. She’s doing things that older women in that club wish they could do.”

“I know she hasn’t broken the law, that we know of.”

“That’s not what I said. She’s not even thirty and she’s the club president. She’s managing a brand-new chapter in this wild crazy state.” He waves his hand out toward the window. “She did all that plus finished high school, got certifications in mechanics, and raised a very smart nine-year-old.”

“How do you know so much about my woman?”

He chuckles. “I pay attention for one, and for two, I looked her up. I did a deep dive.”

“I did a background on her.”

“Yeah, but you only got what work could give you. I did a bit more.”

I slam on the brakes and yank the wheel to the side. “You got your sights set on my woman?”

He laughs harder now. “Fuck, dude, no! You’re as bad as that big ATF guy. I have my sights set on someone else, and I had to look up Scout because of it.” I pause and wait, knowing he’ll tell me. “She saved Minuet. Like not only rescued her from a rapist and murderer but took her in when her family disowned her.”

“Shit, I didn’t know that.”

I get back on the road toward our post.

“How about I watch Ryder tonight and you crash that party?”

I smile at him because he’s right. I have to tell her I approve of her life; it’s why she thinks I’m the law and she’s not. I’m putting the division between us. I don’t even address her by her nickname.

SCOUT

The music blares around me. Couples are making out, but I stand at the bar, not interested in any of the offers I’ve received. River and Reaper took off to her room a bit ago. He’s going to eat a lot of crow before she lets him back into her bed, so they must be arguing.
