“Oh, she left a while back. She said she had to get home and handle some things. Do you need more scones? Or maybe a coffee cake instead? It’s on the house.”

I offered Cherry a warm smile. “You spoil me, Cherry but I have to decline you this time. I’ll see you around though.”

I dropped some dollar bills on the counter as payment and tip, then hurried out and headed for my car.

Back at the cottage, I found Leah pacing around the kitchen, one hand on her waist and the other on her head. She looked at me once I entered, and her gaze shot daggers in my direction.

“Las night was a terrible mistake,” she blurted as she paced. “We shouldn’t have done that … we shouldn’t have …”

“I’m not sorry,” I told her. “I’m not sorry at all, Leah,”

I took the first step toward her, and she backed away. “Leah,” I called.

She shook her head and gripped the kitchen sink behind her with both hands. “This is a terrible thing to do, and Danielle is my friend, and you’re … this is wrong, Tommy.”

I got to her, put my hands on her waist, and dipped my head so I could inhale her scent. I had missed it, and it had only been a few hours since she left me. I knew I would get addicted to Leah at this rate, but it didn’t matter.

My heart had taken the lead and the warning voices in my head faded.

“It is wrong,” I agreed. “But I can’t help myself, Leah. You do things to me that no one has, and I can’t control myself when you’re around.”

Our gazes clicked and we stayed in that enchanted moment for a while before I swooped in and took her lips. Once again, our passion took over, and I made love to her right there in the kitchen hoping to fill this hunger inside me.

Chapter Nine

Leah

Afewdayslater,Danielle was calling me for the third time that day and probably the twentieth time that week, but I still couldn’t take her call. The guilt trickling through me each time I saw her name on my phone’s screen wouldn’t subside, and I didn’t know how to speak to her again without hating myself for what I had done.

Tommy was in the kitchen enjoying the casserole I made, and my phone buzzed continuously on the table till he looked up at me. “Are you going to take that, or do you need me to take it?”

“Don’t,” I yelled and snatched the phone from the table before he could reach for it.

“It’s Danielle,” he said.

“I know … just … I don’t know what to say to her yet, so.”

Tommy pushed his plate aside, and he wiped the corner of his lips with the napkin I set on the table. “Leah, she’s your friend, it’s okay.”

“And I’ve betrayed her,” I said and lowered my head.

Shame was the word to describe what I was feeling. I slept with my best friend’s dad, and now I had to smile at her and pretend like nothing happened when I still wanted him to make love to me.

The past few days we had stayed away from each other, but I didn’t miss the lusty look in Tommy’s eyes each time I caught him staring at me. It was worse because I looked at him the same way and admired his body whenever he wasn’t looking.

Even now, I was admiring how the sleeves of his t-shirt clung to his biceps and made them look exceptionally sexy. I wanted to feel his strong arms around my body and have him make love to me with the same passion as the last time.

The bedroom and the kitchen of this cottage were soiled in my memory now. I couldn’t stay in any of those two spaces and not think of our passionate encounter.

“Why did you run from Nashville?” he asked, and the question cut into the spiraling wave my thoughts had taken.

“I didn’t run,” I lied. “I left because it was the right thing to do.”

Tommy arched a brow, then he peered at me for a long time and the scrutinizing gaze made me squirm in my seat.

He didn’t know what he was asking. If I told Tommy about why I left my music career behind he might not see me as the innocent little Leah anymore. He was like family to me and now that I felt more for him beyond just being my best friend’s dad, I knew seeing him look at me with disgust would hurt both of us.

I couldn’t even handle the thought of Tommy thinking I was a monster.
