Realization hit me as I stood there and watched her sleep. Her grip on the duvet was tight, and her forehead had numerous crease lines while she tossed on the bed. I went to her, my heart beating close to my throat, then gently touched her forehead and leaned down to kiss her there.

She sighed and loosened her grip. Her body relaxed on the bed, and she rolled over to face me, took my hand, and tucked it close to her chest.

Oh boy …I went completely still, then I took large, savory breaths to ease the race of my pulse. I know my skin was flushed. I could feel the heat rising to the surface in me, and the next thoughts flying around my mind terrified me.

I’m falling for her…it wasn’t meant to happen, but somehow, I felt like it was bound to happen anyway. Leah had been on my mind from the moment she walked in on me in the kitchen weeks ago.

Chapter Fifteen

Leah

Myheadwasstillhurting the next evening when I woke up from a long, deep sleep. The air around me smelled of rosemary and mint. I instantly knew Tommy was whipping up something in the kitchen, and the aroma flavoring the air made my stomach grumble.

Groaning, I tried to sit up on the bed, but my sides hurt, so I lay down again and closed my eyes. I hadn’t reached out to Danny since the accident. If she had tried to reach me, then she would be worried sick by now.

Either way, I was glad I was all right. Back then I thought my life would end in a flash.

Remembering the speed, the truck driver used as he came in my direction made me shiver.Did he do that on purpose? Was it really an accident?

There was only one person who would want me dead, and I couldn’t blame him if this was all his doing. A memory of the morning after my accident in Nashville flashed in my mind.

The events of that night were still a blur to me. I remembered the drinking and the loud buzz of music at the club. I could never forget that part. Trevor had handed me a small vial of white substance and I had shown my disinterest before picking my guitar and proceeding to play for the crowd while the DJ was on break for a bit.

Dannielle wasn’t there that night. It was just me, Trevor, and his crew. We had partied hard, and I remembered drinking too much Devil Springs Vodka. It all started to get blurry from there. Trevor was drunk too, and I took the keys because he was a blabbering mess.

When I took off at high speed in his Mercedes, he yelled at me to slow down. I remembered his laughter even as he complained, and the jerky sound of it.

My head started to hurt as I replayed the events of that night. A cold shiver raced up my spine too, and the painful thud in my chest reminded me that the rest of my memory was in jagged bits.

The next thing I remembered was the screeching sound of tires on the road and the loud impact. The ringing in my ears had been so intense, and I had blacked out.

Finding out the next morning that I had hit someone was horrific. I could still remember the victim’s brother’s face as he yelled at me and jabbed his finger in my direction.

How did he get into the hospital room? Why was Trevor nowhere to be found that morning? I sighed and brought my mind back to reality. Seconds later, the door opened, and Tommy walked in holding a tray.

“How are you feeling?” he asked as he kicked the door shut with one leg, then came closer to the bed and placed the tray on the nightstand. His eyes softened, and the smile on his lips warmed me.

“Tired,” I answered before he put his right hand on my forehead and pressed it in gently. His hand was cool on my skin, and I wondered if I was running a fever. “You’re gonna be fine,” he told me before scooting closer to me on the bed.

“I can’t find my phone,” I said in a light tone before he reached into the nightstand’s lower drawer and took it out.

“The cops retrieved it from the wreck,” he told me. “I turned it off because I felt you needed to rest.”

“Thank you.”

He picked up the soup bowl next, then lifted a spoonful to my lips. I tasted it slowly, savored the blends of spices in it, then let him feed me more spoons. When I finished eating, he offered me a glass of water, then left the room to return the dishes to the kitchen.

I turned on my phone when I was alone and saw a series of texts from Danielle.

Where the hell are you?

Why is your cell off? Are you dead?

Call me!

You’re so dead when I get you.

The texts made me chuckle, and I smiled before replying to her texts. I didn’t want Danielle worrying over me especially now that the band had huge prospects coming up. She needed to focus on singing and telling her about my accident would only worry her.
