Eventually, the burning lessened, and I was aware of the strange sensation of movement.

My soul was lifting.

No, mybody.

I could now feel tingles over my new form. Squeezing my hands together, I felt the bite of my nails as they dug into my palm.

I wondered if I would be beautiful like humans. Would my body be like theirs? Or would it be so otherworldly I'd scare them upon first contact?

I hoped the former would be true.

I erupted with a rattling crash. A momentary sense of weightlessness jolted my stomach, and then I was falling.

Fallingfast.

The impact was more painful than the burn I felt in the beginning. Sharp edges from inside my dark vessel cut into my new skin, slicing and grating over my body. I thought I was finally experiencing the act of dying, something I had romanticized eons ago, before taking my task as a light worker seriously. But this was not the time nor the place. Dying was only a pleasant thought when your tasks on Earth were finished, not before they had even begun.

Surely Mother wouldn't allow my departure so early.

I blocked out the pain by thinking of her.Mother trusts me. Mother loves me. I am Mother and she is I.

And then my small containment cracked. The quiet shattering turned into ear-splitting bursts of energy as I exploded from my birthing stone.

That's how I find myself now; standing on wobbling legs- which are covered in gashes that heal into thin pink lines before my eyes- and staring down at the massive egg shaped geode I crawled from.

The crystals inside are all sharp edges and shimmering pink, sparkling beneath the high sun.

A pang of longing splits my heart.

This is the last piece of home I’ll have for a while.

Before embarking on my journey, Mother had told me what this task would entail.

One downside is that I’ll not be returned once I complete the mission. I will simply have to wait and die like all the other humans, remaining for however long it takes my new body to age.

It will be a great experience,Mother had said.

An experience, sure. But great? Well, we all know that growth comes with suffering, and I imagine I’ll endure much of that while on my mission.

Snapping branches catch my attention, and I twist, facing the sound. My fingers fly to my heart, slipping over white silk, and I straighten, enchanted by the soft touch. Another parting gift from Mother; a dress.

My fascination only lasts a moment before being captured by another interesting observation; the red-eyed monster parting the tall stalks of grass ahead.

The woman is covered from head to toe in grime, mud, and dried blood. Her mouth is gaping as she inhales the air, tasting her prey. Teeth as sharp as talons hang from either side of her lips.

This is what has upset the balance.

I step toward the mindless creature, clucking my tongue as I stumble over my new feet. Despite my non-coordinated movements, my eyes stay locked on hers.

Going motionless a few paces away, I focus my thoughts inward.

There’s only one solution when facing a creature so filled with darkness.

Flicking my wrist, I immobilize the female. My inner light pulsates, brightening my new skin as its opulent sheen shimmers. My power holds her hostage as I inhale the void like blackness from her soul, pulling it toward me.

Once it reaches my lips, I swallow, feasting on my first taste of the bitter, putrid madness.

She drops to the sodden ground as I pat my stuffed belly.
