Her heart-shaped face is tan, contrasting the pale color of her companions skin. Brown hair hangs just above her shoulders, the ends tipped in a light purple hue. Her eyes, both wide and intelligent, are a deep, mossy green.

She swings her hips as she walks, the curve of her sides revealing a sliver of dusky olive skin beneath her shirt as it flows with her movements. I catch the end of her sentence as she speaks with Rhyl. “-is a glass bulb with metal attached to the base. It’s the finishing touch on what you’ll need for your home.” The female smiles then, revealing a line of straight, pearly teeth.

My lungs are aflame as I inhale more of her scent, burning the sweet smelling copper to memory.Human.The thought barely registers. It doesn’t matter who, or what, she is.

Rhyl leads her away from me, turning at the end of the street and heading toward an abandoned storefront. I long to drop from my perch and reveal myself to the other half of my soul, but my sanity keeps me seated in place.

I’ve listened well these last weeks. Thea’s settlement is always buzzing with thoughts of the human base nearby. One thing I’ve learned is that most humans don’t feel the Calling. They don’t know who they’re meant for until it’s been proven to them.

I’m certain she would run from me, and if she gets away now, I may never find her again.

I must watch. Study her personality and mannerisms from afar until I’m sure she’d greet me with something other than fear.

There’s another issue I’m all too aware of.

I’ve been a menace to her species. She, as one of the few who’ve survived this long, will know of my history without context. She might fear me. Might… hate me.

Then again, maybe not. She’s laughing with Rhyl now, acting as a person with diplomacy between her species and mine.

Nevertheless, I’ll wait to approach her.

Ha,my inner voice mocks.Like you’vewaitedto apologize to Thea?

I remind myself of the meeting I had two weeks ago, of the human and her Novian bodyguard. What if those…creaturesprotect this female?

Her laughter echoes in the distance, bright and melodic in tone. My eyes flutter shut, and carefully, I let the Calling take control of the reins. Like my mother always warned, the pull is unequivocally strong. Her essence links with mine, bonding us with an invisible chain and insuring I can find her no matter how far she strays.

This delicate female, with her bright hair and curvy waist, is my mate.

The Calling has chosen.

And I, Norvyc the Lonely, will make her mine.
