It lets out a hiss and creeps toward us. I lunge forward, hoping an act of intimidation will scare it off. As I do, it leaps onto me and pins me to the ground. Lana screams, and it turns its attention toward her.

“Lana, run!” I yell as I reach for the rodan’s leg.

She runs, and the thing shakes off my grasp, tearing after her. I follow suit, sprinting over the dark terrain.

I throw fireballs at the creature, but they do no good. My powers must be weakened here.

She makes it a short distance before she trips over a rock in the darkness. The rodan catches up to her and is about to lunge when I see her hold out a hand to stop it.

The creature shrieks and backs away, much to my surprise. A large, golden glow emits from Lana’s hand, and she seems shocked by it.

The creature flees quickly, and I slow as I approach her. She backs away from me on the ground, and I kneel to her level.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay,” I assure her, holding out my hand to her.

She stares at me with fear and mistrust. I scan the area for more predators before turning my attention back to her. She is looking at her hand, examining it thoroughly.

“What was that?” I ask, perturbed that my magic doesn’t work here, but a measly human can scare off a gorton roach in seconds.

“I, I don’t know,” she stutters. “I just held it up to shield my face, and …”

“And it glowed.”

She nods in agreement, and I hang my head as I wonder why I feel more impressed than defeated. I should be angry and rageful that a human woman can conquer a beast, and I can’t.

I glance at her, still examining her hand, opening and closing her fingers. Her black hair is tangled from the fall, and her brown eyes sparkle from the lightning hitting in the distance. I glance behind her and see a pack of gortons approaching over a nearby hill.

I stand and extend my hand to her. “Come on; we’ve gotta go.”

“Go where?” she asks angrily. “Why should I trustyouto take me anywhere? You’re the one who got us here.”

“Will you just come with me?” I ask hastily. I look behind her again, and she glances in that direction.

“Shit,” she says, taking my hand.

I lead her through the terrain to a cliff near where we entered. We run along the rocks until I find a small opening. I continuously check behind me for the gorton pack and see them gaining on us.

“In here,” I say, motioning for her to crawl into the hole.

I jump in after her and scale along the narrow rock walls until we reach a large cavern. I hear the gortons hissing and trying to fit into the crevice, unlucky in their attempts.

My heart races as I lean against the cavern walls, watching her pace. She runs her fingers through her hair and sighs. I examine her body as she walks, noticing her black hair with red streaks and her curves and soft angles. I bite my lip as her breasts capture my attention. They hang perfectly from her chest, perky and waiting to be touched.

I stuff the thoughts deep in my mind and clear my throat. She turns and glares at me, walking toward me angrily.

“What was that?” she asks, pointing a finger at the crevice we entered through.

“Gorton rodans, they’re a type of …”

“No, not that,” she interrupts. “This,” she exclaims, motioning to her hand with the coin embedded in it. “What is this thing? Why did that happen? Why areyouhere?”

I smirk quietly. “As I was saying, thatwas a gorton rodan. That,”I point to her hand, “is a very coveted coin. As for what the glowing fear trick was, I can’t explain.”

I nudge myself off the wall and walk toward her, pacing around her in circles. She smells like tiphe wood and sweetgrass, and my nose fills with her scent, and I close my eyes. She freezes, noticing my exhale.

“You ask a lot of questions,” I say, folding my hands behind my back.

“I’m in another dimension,” she says slowly, locking eyes on me when I cross in front of her. “I have a coinembeddedin my hand, and I have supernatural rodanshuntingme,” she spits the last few words like fire.
