Her cutting tone makes me chuckle. “What made you think you were in charge here?” I ask, stopping in front of her.

She tilts her chin upward, meeting my gaze as I tower over her. She purses her lips and squares her shoulders. I laugh, slightly impressed by her confidence at such a moment. Could it be her newfound powers that make her believe she could take on a trolvor demon or is a distorted sense of self laying beneath her surface?

“What madeyouthinkyouwere in charge?” she asks firmly.

“Oh,” I exclaim, laughing as I back away. “I’m sorry, I was just under the impression that …” I walk close to her and point to myself as I whisper, “I’m a demon,” I shift my point to her, “… and you’re just a human.”

“Justa human, huh?” she remarks with a snarky tone.

“Yes,” I say quietly. “Just a human.”

She cocks her head and lifts an eyebrow at me before kicking me in the shin and running past me. I lunge at her, grab one of her legs, and take her down with me. I crawl over the top of her and pin her down.

I smile and look at her. “Don’t ever try that again.”

She spits in my face, and I wipe it off, inhaling deeply, trying to be patient. She’s only a human; she can’t know the peril of her situation.

I look at her, and she turns her head to the side, avoiding eye contact. I chuckle and gently lift myself off her, offering her a hand to help her up. She takes it and stands, continuing to avoid eye contact.

“Answer me,” she says, crossing her arms and glancing at me. “Why are you here?”

I stare at her and wonder how to get the coin out of her hand. Cutting it off was a terrible idea. That mage had no idea what he was doing. I can be harmed rather quickly if she has magical powers stored in her hand. I think of the mage at the court and know he would be wise about this. The easiest way to gain control of that coin would be to take her back to court and speak with the mage there.

“I’m here to escort you to court,” I respond.

She laughs. “Court? What? Did I miscalculate someone’s tab? Cost the tavern a few coins?”

I roll my eyes. “Demonic court.”

“Why?” she asks frantically.

“I’m under strict orders to take you there.”

“From whom?”

I look at her sharply, showing my irritation. “The king.”

Her face falls, and she begins to moan, grasping either side of her head. I watch in shock and confusion as she kneels to the ground, moaning and wailing.

I kneel to watch her and see the light from the coin glow brightly against her cheek. Her moans turn into screams as she sits on the ground. I stand, unsure of what to do. If I get too close, there’s no telling what she could do with her new, unbridled powers. After a moment, her screaming stops, and she opens her eyes, staring straight ahead in disbelief.

“What was that?” I ask, folding my hands behind my back.

“Oh, gods,” she says, holding her head in her hands. “I don’t know. They’re almost memories, but they’re not mine.”

“Come on.” I hold out my hand to her. She takes it and stands beside me. “The sooner we get you out of here, the better.”

I begin setting up the portal with an emergency charm as she stands behind me, tapping her foot on the ground.

“I’ll find a way out, you know,” she says smartly.

I scoff. “A way out of what?”

“Wherever you’re taking me.”

“Sweet girl,” I say confidently, turning to face her. “Withthat,”I motion to her hand, “you’re going to be a prime target, and every demon will want that coin.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” she replies.
