“Oh, JENNA!”

He growls into my ear as my orgasm recedes, and his seed spills deep inside me. I roll and whimper against his pelvis as he shudders in me, his strong hands holding onto my breasts to balance himself.

I feel as if I could fall to the ground, die of an insatiable craving that is briefly satisfied, and be put to peaceful rest. He groans into my ear, his mouth tracing over my neck as we both bathe in post-coital bliss.

His mouth is still like fire against my skin, and once I’ve finally calmed down, I slowly begin to slide to the floor. He moves with me, holding me around the waist as I sit on his lap.

I am dizzy from his expert spell work.

“Hi,” I whisper.

“Hi,” he says, then traces a thumb over my lips. “You are so beautiful.”

Staring into his dark, sparkling, flamed eyes, I know I am doomed.

FIFTEEN

VERRIN

I toss and turn, wondering why I needed to sleep with her again. This only prolongs my stay on this odd human plane, and I must return to my rightful place at court.

I brush my hair out of my face and sigh, staring at the hut's ceiling. Memories of the court and my chambers flood my mind. The red curtains that hang from my bed, the grand balls sporting the same boring hors d'oeuvres.

My eyes close, and my heart sinks into my gut. I wasn’t happy. The monotony of my life had started eating away at me. Here, I have a chance for adventure, companionship, and somethingdifferent.

I look at Jenna and feel the war between my mind and heart return. I shuffle out of bed and walk to the window, looking at the moon.

Guilt sinks in as I think of the windstorm. I used the reserve of my powers to conjure it, praying it would bring us more time together.

Malaki isn’t a fast traveler, and I believe we can catch up with him quickly. In my daze of infatuation, I made the mistake of letting my feelings prevent me from reaching my goal.

I also drained what was left of my powers, and I am beginning to feel the effects. Every nerve in my body tingles, my arms feel weak, and the muscles in my neck ache. I’m depleting myself of everything I have for her. The ground continent has little magic compared to Ti’ilth, especially this landmass of Tlouz where I’ve seen so little.

I turn and watch her stir in the bedsheets. The sun begins to rise through the window behind her. It takes about twelve hours for my powers to recharge, and we’ll be on the road again by that time. Now I just have to ask myself if I want to use them again.

Days pass as we continue to look for Malaki. We wound up in a farming town on the first day after the windstorm. I manipulated one of the older women to convince us to stay the night so she could feed us. Jenna was hungry and needed nourishment.

The next day there was a tremendous thunderstorm I conjured that hit the woods, flooding the paths. Having lost a wheel from the cart, we are now riding Tiara. We had no option but to race to the next town, about three miles from the last one, and arranged for a message to be sent to Massey regarding the cart's location. We took shelter in a small, abandoned house on the outskirts of town.

My powers were drained significantly after the storm, and we made good headway on Malaki. Luckily for me, another storm hit naturally, and we spent the night under a tree in the forest. She was exhausted, and sex was no longer my primary desire. I held her, and we slept soundly, even through the cold and damp night.

Jenna’s hands wrapped around my waist and broke my thoughts. Tiara whinnied as we rode on to the next location, surely gaining more on Malaki.

“I hope we don’t run into any crazy disaster today,” she remarked. I shift my position on Tiara and look back at her.

“Me either,” I lie through my teeth. “It’s been one thing after another.”

“I wonder if there’s something else going on.”

“What do you mean?” I ask calmly, stuffing my worries about her figuring out my plans.

“Like if the magic systems are overly charged.”

I breathe a silent sigh of relief and let out a chuckle. “Is that something that affects your world?”

“I’m not sure,” she said, laughing. “But sometimes it’s fun to believe it.”

“Why is it fun to believe it?” Humans have the strangest fantasies.
