“Well, because it’s something unknown,” she adds. “Something mystical. I don’t know.”

“What’s so entrancing about something mystical?” I ask, silently hoping she mentions something about me.

“It’s almost an escape,” she said, her voice becoming more serious.

“Escape?” I ask, shocked, and wonder why anyone would want to escape this world.

“Yeah,” she comments, shifting closer to me on Tiara’s back. “Didn’t you ever want to escape from your world?”

I sighed and shrugged. “Yes, actually I did.”

She rubbed her hand on my chest, and I smiled. “Maybe that’s why the statue brought you here.”

Could it be? Could that demon statue have been my saving grace? Moreso, I find myself wondering if Jenna is starting to want me to stay here. I smile and usher Tiara on, breaking into a trot.

Heading east, we came to a small manufacturing town. We have learned from previous villages that Malaki heads east to drop off and gather more artifacts to take to the cities. The sun is beginning to set, and Jenna needs food badly.

I slide off Tiara and extend a hand to help her down. She slides off gracefully and looks at the market in the town square.

“Oh, look.” She points at the end of the square. I squint and see a sign for an inn waving in the breeze. “We can get food there and maybe stay for a night.”

I look at her, surprised. Shewantsto take a break and rest withme.“Let’s do it.”

We went to the local inn, and I tied Tiara outside to a post. I’m grateful I don’t have to use my powers again today.

The inn is crowded and bustling with drunkards. She approached the bar and ordered two beers. We sit and stare at the barkeep, grabbing our drinks.

My heart sinks as I think of the terrible choices I’m making. My eyes lay transfixed on a crack in the wall.“I’m a demon,”I think to myself.“I’m not built for this. I’m built for chaos and misery. I can’t afford to stay here much longer.”

My thoughts are broken by Jenna nudging me. “Hey,” she said, pointing to the barkeep, and he was staring at me with a hand on his hip.

“What?” I ask, clearing my throat.

“Do you want light or dark?”

“Oh, dark, please.” I try not to stutter my words.

The barkeep turned and began pouring our drinks.

“Hey,” she said softly, her hand touching my arm. “Are you all right?”

“Yes,” I say, regaining my posture. “Just tired from the ride.”

Music shoots through the room, and we turn to see a pipe band riling up the customers. Some stand from their tables and begin dancing merrily. I smile, watching them. This isn’t a coordinated, boring grand ball where every move is the same. These people move freely without care of rules or regulations.

“Come on,” Jenna said, grabbing my arm.

“What? Absolutely not,” I say as the barkeep hands me my beer.

“Please?” she pleads.

“No,” I say firmly, taking a large drink of my beer.

“Verrin, come on, it’ll be fun.”

“I don’t know the moves,” I say, chuckling nervously.

“You don’t need to. There are no moves.”
