“I need you to focus,” Verrin commands. Malaki nods. “Why did the chieftain want this necklace?”

“Oh,” Malaki chirps. “He said there was a specific reason, something private.”

“Private?” Verrin asks.

“Something very powerful, something,” Malaki holds a finger to his lips and makes a hushing noise, “very secret.”

Verrin gently let go of Malaki and walked over to me. “Jenna, we have to find that necklace.”

“Why?” I ask. “I mean, yeah, we do, but …”

“But nothing,” Verrin said intensely. “There is more to this than you know.”

I stare at him in silence and nod. Verrin turns to Malaki once more. “Where is the orc?”

SEVENTEEN

VERRIN

I rummage through Malaki’s pockets while he’s in his trance and find nothing of use. My mind flashes back to a conversation I had with another demon ages ago, where he told me of a locket powerful enough to open portals to various worlds.

While Jenna’s necklace sounds similar to the one described to me, even if it isn’t the same one, I must get it back for her.

I glanced at Yeelus and Jenna standing beside each other, facing opposite directions. I rolled my eyes. Why do they have to act like children at a time like this?

“Yeelus,” I yell. The creature snapped its head toward me in disapproval.

“Yes?” he asks in a huff.

“Help me unlock these chests.”

“What for?”

“Just do it,” I command, walking to the back of Malaki’s wagon.

Yeelus jumps on board and opens each chest one by one. I climb on the back of the wagon and find boring artifacts and trinkets, nothing that can help me understand the magic of Jenna’s statue.

“Sire,” Yeelus chirps from the front of the wagon.

“What is it?” I walked toward him and saw he had uncovered a box of books and random papers. I nod gratefully at him and rummage through it.

“What did you find?” Jenna called from the ground.

“What did you find?” Yeelus mocks.

“I wasn’t asking you,” Jenna responds.

I sigh and turn to look at both of them. “Can you two stop? I need to find out what magic was in that thing.”

They huff and remain silent as I continue searching. I find potion recipes, ledgers, trade agreements, and, finally, sales records of various items and their previous owners. I pull the book out and sit on the cart, listening to it creak beneath my weight.

Yeelus winds his way up my shoulder and looks over the notes with me. My brow furrows as I turn page after page of useless descriptions until I reach a picture similar to how Jenna described the statue.

“Hey,” I say, jumping up from the cart. “Is this it?” I ask, leaning over the edge of the cart to show Jenna.

“Yes,” she exclaims, pointing at it excitedly.

I turn the book around and read the notes next to it.
