“For what?” Verrin said intimidatingly.

“For young women, all right? Women who are lonely need something to believe in.”

My heart sinks, and my face turns red. I want to cry. I feel so embarrassed. Verrin glances at me, and I avoid eye contact. Yeelus looks at me, too, smirking again.

“Howdareyou,” Verrin yells, walking toward Malaki, about to punch him in the face.

“Wait,” I call out, extending my arm. “Don’t.”

“Why not?” Verrin asks, one arm cocked to hit him and the other holding Malaki’s shirt.

“I want my necklace back,” I plead, pushing back my tears.

Malaki laughs, and Verrin shakes him. “Laugh at her again … I dare you.”

“Verrin, stop. Let him go.”

Verrin looked back at me and let go of Malaki’s shirt. Malaki stumbled backward and brushed his shirt off as if disgusted by Verrin’s touch. Malaki looked at me with graveness in his eyes.

“The necklace is gone.”

“Gone?” I exclaim with my eyes wide. “What do you mean, gone?”

“I gifted it,” Malaki claims.

“Giftedit? To whom?” I ask.

“That’s none of your concern.”

Verrin took Malaki by the shirt again and stared into his eyes intensely. He let go, and Malaki turned to me in a trance.

“Oh, yes, the necklace,” he said daintily. “I gave it to,” he motions to the west. “Chieftain Robould Manyscars.”

“You gave my necklace to anorc?” I nearly scream.

“Yes,” Malaki pauses, looking at the forest. “He demanded to have it, and I was in no position to refuse him.”

I turn and run my fingers through my hair, looking at the sky. I can’t believe I traded the necklace myfathergave me for some stupid fucking stone. I think of when he first gave it to me. I was a little girl who had ridden my equu alone for the first time. He gifted it to me in front of the barn as the sun set. He told me it would protect and guide me to my true path.

I sigh, tears well in my eyes before I whip around in a fury. “You’re going to get it back for me,” I command, shaking a finger at Malaki.

Malaki’s face falls. “Oh, no, girl.”

“No?” I shout.

“No, the necklace,” he pauses and looks at the sky, “is not for me to obtain.”

Verrin looks at Malaki curiously. “Wait,” he said, holding a hand out to Malaki. “What does this necklace look like?”

“Very pretty,” Malaki said, dazed. “A blue stone with a silver setting. With a long, pure silver chain.”

Verrin turns to me, concerned. “Your father had this necklace?”

I nod and stare at him, confused. “Yeah, why?”

“Why did the chieftain want this necklace?” Verrin asks.

Malaki spins around and laughs. Verrin grabs him by the shoulders.
