I watch Malaki get up from the floor as I start my idea. “We use a disguise spell,” I suggest, turning to Verrin. “We makeyou,” I point my finger into Verrin’s chest, “look like Manyscars, so you get access to the necklace.”

“Okay,” Verrin said slowly, lowering my finger from his chest. “But what do we do about theactualManyscars?”

“A bit of ragweed and dog’s hair,” Malaki said, walking toward us and smiling. “Does the trick every time.”

“What exactly does it do?” I ask curiously.

“It’ll knock him out for a few hours, nothing serious. He’ll think he just fainted when he wakes up, especially if you put it in alcohol. He’ll just think he had a sip too many.”

I stare at Verrin and shrug my shoulders. “Fine.”

Verrin nods in agreement as Malaki sits in the chair across from us.

“Yeelus,” Verrin said firmly.

The creature hops down his arm to the floor in front of him, looking at him with eager eyes. “Yes, sire?”

Verrin lifts his chin toward the door. “Go get the ingredients and drug his wine.”

“What?” Yeelus asks disappointedly. “Why only me?”

“Because you’re small and getting on my last nerve. Besides,” Verrin said, standing and beginning to pace. “The sun is setting, and at your speed, you would be able to get there right as he sits down for dinner.”

Yeelus rolls his eyes and looks at Malaki. “The dog hair is easy. Where do I get the ragweed?”

“There’s some in my front yard,” I say.

Yeelus hisses at me, and Verrin flicks him on the nose. “Quit. Get the stuff and drug his drink. Come back when you’re done, and I’ll cast the spell on myself.”

“Well, Iwould, sire,” Yeelus begins snidely. “But I don’t exactly know where I’mgoing.”

“The main palace,” Malaki said, leaning forward toward Yeelus. “He’s going to be eating at the grand hall. He’s the orc with three tribal tattoos on his neck, sitting at the seat next to the head of the table on the left.”

Verrin and I stare at Malaki questionably. He catches our glances and rolls his eyes.

“Dinner time is the best time for sales,” he said, throwing his hands in the air. “Everyone’s drunk and having a good time. It's good for business.”

“All right,” Verrin said, motioning for Malaki to tone it down. “Yeelus, go get the stuff and get it done.”

Yeelus scoffs, then he runs to the door, opens it, and scampers off. Verrin huffs and closes the door before turning to face Malaki and me.

“Now what?” Verrin asks, crossing his arms.

“Well,” Malaki stands and heads to the front door. “I need to eat,” he turns to wave at me. “I’ll be back after I’m finished.”

Verrin stepped to the side and watched as Malaki exited my house. He closed the door and locked it behind him, staring at me and pointing to the door.

“We’re not seriously letting him stay for this, are we?” Verrin asks.

“No,” I shake my head and laugh. “Absolutely not.”

“Okay, good,” Verrin said, sitting next to me.

“So, this necklace,” I begin, clasping my hands in my lap and staring at them. “I assume you want it?”

“Jenna, I know it was from your father,” Verrin begins, his voice soft and solemn. “But it needs to be protected correctly. One slip into the wrong hands again and …”

“I know,” I say, disappointed. “The end of Protheka.”
