I hear Verrin sigh sadly as he put his hand on my arm, comforting me. “You know he loved you very much.”

I nod, and my eyes begin to water. “I know.”

He put his arm around me and stroked his hand along my shoulder. I leaned into him slightly and cried quietly as he made shushing noises and patted my arm.

“You have to trust me on this one, Jenna,” Verrin said softly.

I nod against his chest and pull away from him, wiping my tears and taking a deep breath. I stare at the front door and wonder where Yeelus is and if he’s made it into the main palace yet.

“He’s fine,” Verrin said, looking at me.

I stare back and smile. “How do you always know what I’m thinking?”

“I’m psychic,” Verrin teases. “And your face is incredibly expressive.”

I laugh and sit back on my hands. “Guess that’s it for my poker face.”

We chuckle and sit in silence before I turn to look at him. “Verrin?”

“Jenna?” he responds, looking at me with his playful eyes.

“When you get the necklace, what will you do with it?”

Verrin sighs and avoids eye contact with me. “I’m going to,” he pauses and exhales, “go home.”

“Oh,” I say, glancing at the floor.

My mind begins racing. We could have the necklace back by midnight, and Verrin would be gone. There’s no reason for him to return to my realm after returning home. Tears fill my eyes as an urge to keep him here rises in my chest.

“What if I don’t want you to go?” I ask, locking eyes with him.

“Jenna,” he begins, his face showing concern.

The front door is kicked in, and Verrin and I jump from our seats. Three large orcs burst in and bellow, brandishing their clubs. They take their places on either side of the door as Manyscars walks through them and grins at us.

Manyscars holds Yeelus by his tail and shakes him in the air before dropping him on the floor and chuckling. Yeelus scrambles to Verrin’s side, and Verrin steps in front of me.

“Now,” Manyscars begins, his voice low and cold. “Did you really think we would fall for a disguise spell?”

Malaki was a traitor!

NINETEEN

VERRIN

There is no time to think. The orcs aren't going to buy my disguise spell this time. I have to do something before it's too late.

I am tired of holding back. I know the power I possess, and I can't keep hiding it out of fear. Jenna will never forget what she is about to see, and I may lose her forever because of it. I can't let that stop me from doing what must be done. So, I make the decision to act.

It feels as if it has been so long since I've used this magic, but now that I've seen what I needed to see, I feel a little more at ease. All I need to do is concentrate on the right thing.

Keeping Jenna safe is my only priority.

I have no choice. If I don't stop them, Jenna will be in danger. I can't hold back any longer. My true demon magic is strong, and with it, I can defeat anyone. It is the only way to keep her safe. I'll have to take the risk.

I close my eyes, and I focus on the feeling of the air around me. It feels like a cool wind blowing down my spine as I breathe deeply. I feel myself begin to fade as a familiar sensation takes over, the one I always experience when using this power.

I am in control now. I know what’s going on and what I am. There is no point in denying it. I am a demon.
