I pick up the bridles from the stable's entrance and walk to the tack room. “He’s fine, Yeelus.”

“Jenna!” he screeches.

The equus begin kicking and whinnying again. I walk over to Tiara and try to calm her.

“Stop it. You’re scaring them.”

“Well, Verrin is scaring me,” Yeelus said in a quieter tone.

I look at him as the equus simmer down. “So, he’s sad. He'll get over it.”

“Jenna, I’ve never seen him like this. He won’t do anything. He doesn’t even like watching fights anymore.”

I scoff. “Of course, he likes watching fights.”

“Please come with me,” Yeelus begs.

“Come with you?” I exclaim, laughing in disbelief. “Come withyou? To the demonic court? You’re out of your mind.”

“Jenna,” he said softly. I glance at him with my arms crossed. “I know you love him too.”

I scoff again. Love, what a myth. A cute fairy tale to read to your kids and give them false hope for the future.

“Love isn’t real, Yeelus,” I say as I hang the bridles on their hooks.

“I didn’t think it was either, Jenna,” he comments, running alongside my feet as I walk out of the stable and into the field. “Until I saw the difference in Verrin without you in his life.”

I stop walking and turn toward him. Maybe there’s a difference, but I’m sad, too, and I wasn’t the one who burned down a village.

“So, what do you want from me?” I ask.

“Come with me, be with him,” Yeelus pleads.

I watch as he widens his eyes and sits in front of me. He looks at the ground and sighs.

“Jenna, you don’t know what it’s been like.”

I lift my chin and think of his proposition. If I return to him and he gets angry at me, I could be dead within seconds.

“Don’t do that,” Yeelus snaps.

“Do what?” I say defensively.

“Think he would hurt you.”

“You can read minds?” I ask angrily.

“No, but I can read faces,” Yeelus comments mockingly.

I can’t help but smile slightly at his statement. I look at the ground, then back at him.

“He wouldn’t?” I ask.

“Of course not,” Yeelus exclaims, standing up. “Jenna, he is in love with you. The explosion and the powers he used were all because he wanted to protect you, and he never meant for any of this to happen.”

I sigh and contemplate his request. “What about my mother?” I ask.

“Cared for,” Yeelus interjects quickly. “Even by myself, if I have to.”
