“And my farm?”

“Done,” Yeelus agrees.

I look at him suspiciously for a minute before responding.

“Fine.”

“Really?” Yeelus asks, his eyes lighting up and his tail twitching quickly.

“Yes,” I say, tears streaming down my cheeks again. “You’re right.”

I sit on the ground and begin to cry more. Yeelus walks up to me and puts his head on my lap.

“I know,” he said.

I inhale and gather myself before looking down at my dirtied clothes. “I can’t go like this,” I say through a laugh, wiping my tears away.

“Oh, absolutely not,” Yeelus said with excitement, hopping away from me.

He squints at me, and black smoke arises from my clothes, creating a cloud around me. I cough and wave the smoke away.

“Yeelus!” I complain.

The cloud fades, and I see Yeelus staring at me with a grin. I look down at the red and gold ballgown lining my figure.

“It’s perfect,” Yeelus said with admiration in his eyes.

I laugh and walk towards him as the blue light opens behind him. I watch him turn and hop into it, disappearing. I inhale sharply and follow suit.

TWENTY-THREE

VERRIN

“I don’t know, Yeelus. I don't think I have a chance. The look on her face.” I look down at my dress robes, shaking my head in disbelief. I gaze at the ballroom, watching the noble couples spin and dance around each other. “It was a sign of the end,” I sigh.

“Then again,” I pause, thinking of the words. “Maybe if she justunderstoodwhy I had to do it, there would be a chance. She’s understood me so far. I don’t see why she wouldn’t try to now.”

I stand and adjust my robes accordingly. “You’re right, Yeelus. I should go get her. Explain my side.”

I look down at the table and see Yeelus has disappeared. I look embarrassed, wondering how long I’ve been talking to myself.

“Yeelus,” I called out, walking along the walls of the grand ballroom.

I shift and weave between nobles and commoners, searching every table and nook for Yeelus. To get to Jenna, I need his power of teleportation. I bought him because he had powers I always wished I had and discovered recently that was one of them.

I leaned against the wall and crossed my arms. He’s probably gone to cause some of his own chaos since mine has begun to bore him.

A red-and-black-laced ball gown catches my eye from across the room. The woman stands, laughing with one of the most respected demons in the court. Her confidence and charisma could echo through this room and charm every person in it.

She turned to the side, and it was as if she had spun in slow motion. Her red hair and green eyes reflected beautifully in the chandelier's light, and I realized it was Jenna.

I uncrossed my arms slowly, and she glanced in my direction, locking eyes with me … her face shifted from joy to sorrow. My heart sinks as I wonder if she is here for her final goodbye. She has a good heart and would waste time making closure for the sake of our peace.

We step toward each other and meet in the middle of the dance floor. Couples spin around us and blur in my peripheral vision as her beautiful face becomes more evident.

“Jenna, what are you doing here?” I ask, trying to mask my nervousness.

“Yeelus came to get me,” she responds with a smile. “He told me Ihadto come with him,” she pauses and meets my gaze. “And you know how persistent he can be.”
