I chuckle and put my hands on my hips. “Yeah, I didn’t know about that part before I bought him.” I pause and look at the floor. “Look, Jenna.”

She places a finger on my lips. “Don’t.”

“No,” I say, gently lowering her hand from my face. “You need to hear this.” She stares at me with concern. “When it happened, the explosion,” I continue. “It wasn’t within my control. I just couldn't handle thinking of something happening to you, hurting you. My powers went wild, and I lost control.”

“I know,” she said softly.

“Is the town repaired? Is your farm all right?” I ask, worried.

“Yes, yes, it’s fine,” she responds with a slight smile. “Everything is being repaired, and the farm is fine.” She motions to Yeelus, sitting on a table behind her, watching us curiously. “Yeelus said he would even tend to it if he has to.”

“Yeelus on a farm?” I say with surprise. “I can’t imagine that.”

She laughed and looked at the floor. I rub the back of my head and search my mind for the right words. We say each other’s names at the same time and laugh bashfully. I motion for her to go first. She took my hands in hers as the music played in the background of the ballroom.

“Verrin, I’ve been on the farm for days now, and I can’t stop thinking about you.”

My heart began to flutter, and hope rose in my core. “I haven’t stopped thinking about you either,” I begin before she holds a hand to me.

“Let me finish, please.”

I nod and silence my burning desire to spill everything I’ve been thinking and feeling to her.

“That moment terrified me, showed me what you really are.” She sighs. “A demon with supernatural strength that can destroy a whole village if threatened.”

“But, Jenna …”

She holds a hand to me again, and I exhale as I look at the floor.

“But,” she said, and I lift my eyes to meet hers, the hope returning, “that may be what youare, but I have realized that’s notwhoyou are.Whoyou are,” she grazes over my hands with her thumbs, “is a caring, loving demon. One who would literally go to the ends of Protheka to protect the ones he cares for,” she motions to Yeelus, “even that thing.”

I chuckle and stare into her eyes. “Is it my turn now?”

She laughed and threw her head back. I watch in awe, wondering how she could get any more beautiful. “I never meant to scare or hurt you or anyone, and I am so sorry that you witnessed that. All I can do is promise you that it willneverhappen again.”

She nodded, and her eyes began to water. I turned her hands over and ran my fingertips along the lines of her palms, my mouth open as I searched for the right words.

“I’ve been a demon since I was born … this,” I motion to the ballroom, “has been my world for ages. I thought chaos and mayhem were the only things that could keep me alive, giving me a reason to wake up every morning,” I pause and meet her gaze. “When I was with you, I woke up to care for you every morning. You, Jenna Daltry, are why I wake every morning because now I know someone is out there for me. I understand now that what matters most is loving you how you deserve to be loved.”

Her eyes began to water. “Verrin,” she said before jumping to hug me.

I squeezed her tightly and placed my hand on the back of her head. My soul is filled with a joy I have never experienced.

“Verrin, I love you too,” she whispers softly as she kisses my neck.

She pulled back, and I placed my hand gently on her cheek. I leaned in to kiss her, and she wrapped her arms around my neck. I pulled her close and ran my hands through her hair. We pulled apart from each other slowly and laughed. I peered over her shoulder and saw Yeelus clapping on the table. I laughed and pointed, and she turned to watch him. She broke out in laughter as she turned to me.

“What will you do now?” I ask, concerned for her mother and her farm.

“Well,” she motions to Yeelus. “With your little friend’s,” she pauses, “withourlittle friend’s help, we can travel back and forth whenever we please.”

“Yeah,” I say, shrugging slightly. “I, uh, think I owe your town some amends.”

“I think they would appreciate that,” she said, swaying to the music.

“So,” I say, spinning her around and pulling her back, “what if we go back to your place for a while?” She nods in agreement as I take her hand in mine, my other placed on her waist. “I can help repair the town, pay my dues, and then I can show you my world.”

She laughs. “I love it. That sounds like a plan,” she paused and looked around the room, “but I’m not sure I know the moves to this dance.”
