I can hear the demon’s breathing above my home. It’s heavy and labored.

Maybe the demon is tired from the speeches it gave. I can’t help but think the voice in my head is sharp and sarcastic.

As I rip up a floorboard, I bite back a laugh that would surely be mirthless.

I would almost admire my newfound strength gained through panic, but I need to get at the book.

The more I use it, the more I learn about it. Which is not necessarily ideal.

I would prefer to have an instruction manual open in front of me as I use it.

It’s clear that I have no more control over the demon. Even though I compelled him to fight for me.

With magic that I don’t know how to use.

The roof over my room comes off in a deafening explosion of ripping iron and splintering wood.

I fall forward, hugging the floor, the book falling from my hands. It skidded away from me and across the floor.

But I dare not move.

Everything has frozen again. I can hear the giant demon breathing above me. His breath, though far up in the sky, is hot.

A strange fragrance accompanies him. It’s not unpleasant. It’s light. It smells like the things we gather from the desert surrounding the village and farms.

Like nabella and nimond beans, the demon smells like the bark from the tiphe tree.

Everything starts moving again when the scraps of the roof are thrown aside.

The demon reached into the shack with his giant hand. I crawl around the room, trying to stay away out of his reach, but all that does is make a mess of my room.

However, when his hand finally closes around my waist, he’s gentle. The demon is holding me as though he has an expensive gift in hand.

Instead of a terrified human slave girl.

I’m notsure if I collapsed from fear or simply fell asleep.

Probably the former. I wasn’t tired enough to fall asleep in the hands of a demon likely to eat me.

Why me?The words resound frustratedly in my mind. And my mind just keeps going back to the magic.

And the book.

Which is still in the ruins of my room.

I shiver slightly as the night air becomes cooler. I have no idea as to where we are.

Will anyone in the village even miss me?

I know my parents will. And I know Demi will. But they’ll have no time to look for me.

And they wouldn’t know where to start even if they could look for me.

What will the demon do with my body once he’s done with me? Will he discard my bones? Or will he use them in a dark magic ritual?

I shake again.
