This time it’s not because I’m cold.

Suddenly, we slow down, and then the demon is bending. He places me carefully on a rock.

I hold on for dear life as he lets go.

When I turn, he’s shrinking to the size of a man. Well, he’s still a lot taller than both human men and orcs, but he’s smaller than he was a moment ago.

At any rate, he’s not a giant any longer.

My anxiety has quieted down … slightly, but it’s not as though we are on even ground.

He’s still a powerful magical being who managed to scare off an entire contingent of orcs.

And I’m still just a human girl in all of this.

Frustration burns in me again. The frustration that I cannot do anything about my situation is painful.

It makes me itch.

“Who are you?” The demon growls, his red eyes flaming more brightly than coals. “And are you one of those human fools using magic?”

He almost spits the question at me.

The demon looks at me as though he would like to shake me. He also looks as though he’s just barely restraining himself.

“N-n-no!” I stammer my reply. I hug my arms closely around myself, still shaking.

When I look up, the demon is still looking at me with narrowed eyes.

He clearly doesn’t believe me.

“I swear to the gods!” My voice breaks on the last word. “I swear I have done no magic! I’m just a human!”

The demon lifts his face to the air and inhales deeply.

Then he takes another step toward me.

“Liar.” He whispers the word. That I have not burst into tears yet is a great surprise to me.

Who does this demon think he is anyway? He has turned away from me, sighing heavily. I cannot help but stare at his profile.

Is this really the warrior I summoned to help my village? It has to be. How was the magic of the book so accurate?

He’s certainly handsome, even though desert sand crusts his entire body. His tall, broad figure is proud and powerful.

He has the most beautiful, snow-white hair too.

I cannot help but imagine running my hands through those tresses.

The demon turns to me, sighing.

“You are lying. I know you are,” he speaks almost contemplatively. “I can smell the relics of that magic on you.”

Before I can protest again, a giant red light flickers in the sky above us. The demon looks up, and I do not miss the soft expletive that he exhales.

Just then, another demon is descending from the sky. The demon perches on a rock close by and peers down at my demon.

Why are you referring to him as your demon? The frustrated voice in my head asks exasperatedly.
