Just then, the soz’garoth walked in. The old demon looks tired and angry. But these are the usual expressions on his face.

“That is Varzig’s new plaything,” he grunted. “Now get over it and get to sleep. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.”

“We haven’t eaten yet,” Kryon replied, his voice hot and sharp. I know that every demon in the citadel is hungry.

We brought supplies along, but the soz’garoth has been working us hard. There has been almost no time to stop and eat.

“Well, you will all have to make a plan about that then.” The old sorcerer demon replied curtly.

Then he turned and left. This is when my human girl speaks.

“I can cook for you.” Her voice is timid, but her eyes are hard when I look at her.

I cannot help but admire her resolve. I have just kidnapped her from the only home she has ever known.

And now she’s surrounded by creatures who are taller, larger, and stronger than she is.

And I have not even told her that I have no plans to eat her yet.

But now she’s offering to cook for us.

The other demons look at me and then at each other. After a moment’s silence, we all agree, and I push the human girl over to our supplies.

I go about retiring for the night as she starts a fire and rifles through our rations.

I need to question her at some point. I need to find out what she has done to me. What magic she has used.

A deep-seated fear burns inside me. A fear that the magic she has used has changed me irreparably.

I really cannot go around saving random human villages. And if the King ever finds out that I have made speeches like the one I did, I will not live very long.

My stomach turns and twists at the thought of the King finding out. I cannot afford to anger him now.

Not when we are on so critical a mission.

Being chosen by the King to come along on this quest as the leader was a big boost in my standing with the other demons.

I was probably only chosen because of my fighting abilities, but this quest can help me prove myself as more than a fighter.

All I know is that I have to play a critical role in finding the Tome of Ledantis. All I can hope is that this human girl’s magic has not interfered with me.

A clattering of dishes draws my attention to the main communal area that the demons created.

It’s several Equu steps away from my chosen resting place, and the human girl has placed large pots there and has begun cooking.

Whatever she’s cooking smells amazing, and I know the other demons agree. They are all muttering happily amongst themselves and nodding their thanks at her.

She came over to me and handed me a plate, and I inspected the meal carefully.

The human girl has made brown stew from dried Capra meat. Somana and Frisse make the meal more fragrant.

“Your plaything is a well-trained maid Varzig,” Kryon calls after he has finished his plate. I watch as the human girl blushes. “I certainly hope you plan on sharing her. She looks as though she has room for us all.”

The other demons crow and laugh, and the human girl blushes even more.

To my surprise, a small smile lingers across her full mouth.

Does she like the idea of being used by every demon here? The thought, when it crosses my mind, makes me angry.
