The only question you should be asking is how they plan to take the book if you are tied to it? Will they kill you for it?I ask myself.

Steady girl. Be calm.I curled my hands into fists, wincing as my nails bit into the flesh on my palms.

The sounds of the rest of the village have faded away. All I can hear now is the occasional pot clinking against pot. I can also hear the howl of wild worgs.

It’s quite cold in my room, though I do not dare shiver. I do not dare move in front of the elf sorcerer.

“The ritual to sever your connection to the book will be severe, I’m afraid.” He smiled almost sympathetically at me.

“The Tome of Ledantis has always been notorious for its loyalty. Upon meeting you and touching it for the first time, it must have chosen you as an anchor,” the dark elf says.

The dark elf’s explanation made sense as I realized that the book literally became attached to me.

Or rather, the magic of the book has become attached to me.

Maybe it liked your writing,a nervous voice in my head said. The voice is as shaky as I am.

“The ritual I will use will strip your connection to the book. It will kill you in the process, but that cannot be helped.” The elf knelt then and reached beneath my bed where he pulled out the book.

The dark elf knows everything about me. He knew everything about me before I even stepped into the room.

How is any of this possible?I asked myself frustratedly.A few weeks ago, you were living a normal life. And yet, in that time, you have drawn the attention of the orcs, demons, and a dark elf.

My skin tingled as I watched him flip through it.

“You are quite a good writer,” he murmured after some time. He traces the blank pages with his fingers.

I cannot help but speak, shocked at his words.

“How can you …?” The words come out in a whisper.

“How can I see your writing? I’m made of magic, my dear, like the book. I can see everything you have written. I see your desperation to protect your village. It’s admirable.”

“Why do you have to kill me?” I whispered. My throat is very dry, and I cough slightly.

I hope I will be able to have a glass of water before I die.

My voice was raspy, and the elf continued speaking after looking at me for a minute.

“I would have killed you anyway. As I mentioned, I have had my eye on this village for a long time. Severing your connection to the Tome of Ledantis will simply make your death more painful.”

I nod in understanding. My death had been written in stone the moment the dark elves noticed the village.

A thousand images bloomed in my mind as the dark elf sorcerer paged through the Tome of Ledantis.

At first, all I was seeing were images of my parents and Demi. Images of my small life in the village.

Then I came across the tome and wrote in it for the first time. It became my lifeline so quickly that now I could not bear being parted from it.

The images in my mind changed, and soon I was seeing Varzig. I was seeing him for the first time all over again.

I see him defend the village from the orcs. I hear him pledge to protect us all.

The images change again, and now I remember learning more about him. Learning that he loved reading stories as much as I did.

Our first kiss quickly follows my memories, and the memory is hot and desperate. And right then, as I sit across from the dark elf, I yearn for Varzig.

If only I could see him one more time. If only I could talk to him one more time.
