Everyone smiles, nods, or says a polite greeting. I smile and give a small wave. Miguel stands next to me like a statue. He seems unamused by everything. He doesn’t seem like he wants to be here at all and he isn’t even pretending.

“Well, I’m going over to my table but thank you for being here, Jenna. It means… Thank you,” Jenna smiles and starts to walk away.

“Where can I put this?” I ask, holding up the gift bag.

“Aww. Thank you, Ysenia.” She side-hugs me then takes the bag from me. “I’ll be over there if you need me.”

She gestures at a long table, waves at us then heads over to that table. Miguel pulls out a chair. He smiles at me and I slowly take my seat. He sits next to me and then the awkwardness begins. We all just stare at each other.

Ugh. Why am I here?

“You look great, Ysenia,” Mila Williamson says cheerfully.

Mila was never my favorite person. I tolerated her because of Jenna. Mila always came across as a condescending pain in the ass. Snide remarks. Always acting better than us. Flashed money around. Showed off all of her top-of-the-line clothes, cars, and such. Drove all of us crazy.

“Thank you, Mila. You are too kind,” I smile.

“You really do look amazing, Ysenia,” Troy Bates grins.

Troy Bates was a total jock. All brawn and no brains. All he cares about was football, booze, and sex. When I denied going on a date with him, he became a total asshole. He made my life hell and I hated him for it.

“Why the compliments now? You were a total dick to her in high school?” Miguel asks, making everyone’s mouth drop, including mine.

“What?” Troy growls.

“I didn’t stutter,” Miguel grins. “You treated her like shit. Even spread rumors about her.”

“Nnn… No, I didn’t,” Troy stammers.

“Then you forgot the ass whooping I gave you in the locker room. I was pretty sure you’d never forget that.” Miguel’s voice is cold as ice. I’ve never seen him so heartless.

Wait. Ass whooping?

Miguel protected my honor in high school? I never had a clue. I knew Troy had gotten his ass beat but never knew why or who did it.

“Miguel,” Troy warns.

“Come on guys. We are here for a celebration,” Janette Banks interrupts.

Janette was always the peacekeeper. Kept quiet most of the time. Kind and generous to others. We were friends during middle school but things changed in high school. We drifted apart.

Seems like that’s always what happens with people and me… we drift apart.

“She’s right,” a woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and flawless looks says. “Miguel, it’s nice to see you again.”

Jealousy pains me. The way she spoke makes it sound like she and Miguel were intimate. I look at Miguel. He’s staring at the woman with an eyebrow rose.

“No clue who you are,” he shrugs then looks at me. He leans down to my ear and whispers, “Not too late to make a run for it.”

“Don’t tempt me,” I giggle softly, looking up at him. He smiles warmly.

“Aww. How long have you two been together, Ysenia?” Janette asks. Miguel and I both tense.

Dear God. Now he’s going to bolt out of the room.

“They aren’t together. You can tell by the look in Miguel’s eyes,” Troy smirks.

Surprisingly, Miguel scoots my chair closer to his and then drapes his arm around the back of my chair. He looks at Troy and grins. Miguel’s aura is pure alpha mate. He’s marking his territory. I know it’s just for show to piss Troy off but it still feels nice.
