“You are one lucky lady, Ysenia,” the blonde smiles.

“Mmhmm,” I reply, not trusting myself to speak.

“Absolutely adorbs,” Janette gushes. She looks at Mila. “Are you coordinating our high school reunion? Almost fifteen years. We should celebrate that.”

The conversation takes off about our high school reunion. Even Troy joins in on it with his ideas, which surprisingly weren’t that bad. Miguel and I sit quietly while the others talk. His arm is still around my chair. Warmth radiates from his body and I fight the urge to lean against him.

It’s just an act. Don’t feel anything,I remind myself. It hurts to admit but I need to remember it. Otherwise, I’m going to get hurt.

Chapter Twelve

Miguel

Acting as though Ysenia was my girlfriend was such a childish thing to do. Troy had pissed me off so bad that I was seeing red. I damn near kissed Ysenia just to shut him up.

The guy had always been a dirtbag especially when it came to Ysenia. Even after all this time, he still had the hots for her. I’d be damned if he was going to put any moves on her while I was around.

Bastard,I mutter to myself.

Ysenia is eating quietly. She hasn’t said two words since I put my arm around her. I have a feeling I’m going to get an earful in the car. After all, I was the one who acted like an idiot in the car when she said she was happy I was back. Now I had my arm around her and acting like we were together. She probably thought I was using her or playing with her emotions.

Damn it. I need to fix this.

“I can’t believe Jenna is marrying Keven Loften,” Mila says, looking behind us at my sister’s table. Ysenia goes still. Her fork falls to the plate with a loud sound. We all look at her.

“What did you just say?” Ysenia whispers.

“Um… I can’t believe Jenna is marrying… Kevin Loften,” Mila repeats hesitantly.

“How long have they been together?” Ysenia asks faintly. Her body trembles slightly.

“They’ve been together at least since our ten-year class reunion. They’ve been traveling abroad for the past four years or so.”

Jenna has been traveling? This is the first time I had heard of this. Everytime we talked and I asked what she was up to, her response was alwayswork.

Ysenia drops her hands to her lap. She balls them and takes several slow breaths.

“Oh, shit. You didn’t know he cheated on you with Jenna and they left the country to keep it hush-hush.” Troy leans back in his chair.

I want him to say he’s just kidding; however, he seems genuinely shocked and everyone else seems remorseful. I glance back at Jenna’s table. My eyes meet Jenna’s and she instantly pales.

Sitting next to her is jughead Kevin. When our eyes meet, he quickly lowers his. He knows he’s done wrong. My eyes go back to Jenna, who looks like she’s ready to bolt out the door.

How the hell could she do this to Ysenia? And why invite Ysenia to be part of the wedding?

I stand up and turn to head over to Jenna. Ysenia grabs my arm. I look at her. She’s looking down at her plate.

“Don’t do anything on my behalf,” she states coldly. “Just enjoy the food.”

“Ysenia,” I whisper. She shakes her head and lets go of my arm.

I stare at Jenna. Her and piece of shit, Kevin, are looking my way. They both look terrified. Jenna begins to stand and I shake my head and then take my seat next to Ysenia.

All eyes are on Ysenia, who looks lifeless. I can’t even imagine how she’s feeling. Probably the same way my dad felt when he learned my mom cheated and Jenna wasn’t his daughter. Guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Ysenia grabs her forks and begins eating as though nothing happened. Slowly, one by one, we all pick up our forks and eat. The table is completely silent. We share glances between us but say nothing. Most likely because we are all unsure what to say or do to make this better.

Ching. Ching. The sound of someone tapping a glass gets all our attention except Ysenia.
