What the…it comes from the dungeon I use for Anya and other women. I turn off my phone to stop the ringing. I slowly slide a wall that doubles as my secret door to the room. My eyes widen when I find Anya tied to a cross, naked, and with a man raping her. She has busted lips. Bruises cover half of her face.

I control myself and wait for the right time. Suddenly, somebody knocks on the wall while another man points a gun at Anya.

"Get out, Gabriel, or little Anya's brain will scatter on the floor."

Anger rushes through me. If Vigo or Xerxes think I'll surrender because of Anya, they are mistaken. She has always known her role in this. She knows she'll have to sacrifice if my plan doesn't go my way.

“Gabriel!” Anya yells.

I quickly duck and open the door. The man is startled and is unable to shoot me in time. But I get to shoot him in the chest, killing him almost instantly. I rush to the other room for cover when other men run after me. I open another secret closet and take out a rifle.

Before I can open the door to attack, somebody throws something from the window. The small bottle erupts and hits one side of my face. It’s acid!I scream in pain as I feel the liquid burn my face. I try to endure the pain, but my body surrenders to shock and falls.

A pail of water wakes me, and a punch on the face reinforces it. I scream as I become aware of the pain on my face. I don't know if the acid got into my eyes, but everything is a blur. Memories of the day Xerxes attacked my father return to me. But this time, I'm not in the closet anymore. No Vigo to hide me.

I close my eyes hard and open my eyes again. My vision clears a little. I look around the room and find myself in the dungeon. Anya is at the center of the room, still tied to a cross and ravished by Xerxes's men. I struggle to free myself, but another punch hits my burn. My head spins from the pain. As I open my eyes again, I see Vigo in the corner of the room, tied to a chair and bloody.Move!I pray, but Vigo doesn't. His head is down; he looks almost dead.

"Uncle Vigo can't save you, little Gabriel," Xerxes tells me. I can't see his face clearly, but I imagine him to have the smile of Lucifer. "I gave you a chance to have a quiet life, little boy. But it's true what they say. In war, do not spare a son of an enemy. It might grow up to hunt you."

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

"You really think of my daughter as a fool, don't you?" Xerxes grabs my burn with his hand and squeezes it. I scream and almost beg, but I stop myself. "You planned this well. You even turn Vigo against me. But you can't win over me. I even know this house more than you. And did you really think you could fool Sasha?"

What does he mean?Did Sasha know who I am? Xerxes admitted it; he knew that I lived. Knowing I'm his enemy's son, Xerxes probably had somebody tailing me. He must have known my plan to kill him.Sasha.She couldn't be part of this! She is in love with me! She wouldn't want anyone to harm me.

"What did you want to do to my daughter? Fool her and make her into your slut?" Xerxes squeezes my burn again. "Do you think my daughter will choose you over me?"

“I am not a monster like you,” I yell at Xerxes. “Sasha is also not a monster.”

“Are you sure about that? You are your father’s son. Didn’t you make yourself into a monster?” Xerxes tells me. “I am a monster. Sasha is a bigger monster than I am.”

No.Xerxes only wants me to give up on his daughter. He's lying. Sasha can be anything except a traitor. She's also a victim of everything Xerxes has done. But a stupid doubt keeps growing in my head. Blood is thicker than water. What if Xerxes told Sasha the truth about me, and she believed him? What if she did choose him instead of me? What if she betrayed me? Anger makes me forget the pain of my burned face. My mind found a way to trick my body from the pain.Sasha!

My vision clears, and I see Lucifer before me. I laugh at his presence like a madman. I will kill him. Forget about love. Forget about happy-ever-after. I remember why I survived all these years. It is all to bring hell to Xerxes and raze their lives with misery.

Still, my heart tells me to spare Sasha. She's not part of this. I still want her to love me. I must survive to throw her father to hell but have her still.

Chapter Six

Sasha

I hang up the phone when Gabriel doesn't answer. Where is he? I shake my head to avoid negative thoughts about him or my father. Papa will not do anything to harm him. He doesn't break his promises to me. What about Gabriel? What if he met Anya and realized she was better? What if he changes his mind and doesn't want to risk his job or the life he has started in this city?

No.Gabriel is like my father. He won’t break his promises to me. But where is he? He has been gone for hours.

Papa.I don't want to doubt him, but my gut feeling tells me he has something to do with Gabriel not answering my call. No. He will not hurt the man I love. But he was disappointed about Gabriel's status in life. Papa didn't like the idea that all Gabriel could offer me was a hand-me-down ring from his mother.

I dial Uncle Vigo's number. Uncle Vigo is the only one who can calm me down right now. He could tell me if my father has something planned against Gabriel. He can also be the only person to locate him immediately without my father knowing.

“What is going on?” I want to scream the question. Even Uncle Vigo is not answering his phone.

It's almost time for the dinner Papa organized, but I haven't even told Gabriel about it. "I don't like this," I look out the window and see the setting sun.Gabriel.

I grab my jacket and rush out of the hotel room. I have to meet my father to be sure he did nothing to Gabriel. It's alarming that Gabriel and Uncle Vigo haven't called me since I met my father at the restaurant. Was lunch a distraction? Did he send Uncle Vigo behind my back and order him to do something to Gabriel?

I stop a few steps away from the elevator. No way! Uncle Vigo and Papa are excited about my wedding with Gabriel. They wouldn’t fake it – especially Uncle Vigo. He is the one who told me about my possible marriage to Dmitri Fador. He was the one who urged me to find a man who could fight for me. Uncle Vigo will never harm the man I love.
