Vickie pursed her lips together. She wanted to know exactly what was going to happen before getting liquored up.

“Please welcome the amazing, most talented communicator to the dead,Violet.”

People clapped politely as Violet stepped from behind the presenter. Tonight, she wore a figure-hugging black dress, trimmed with lace, and flaring out into a long, full skirt. Her hair was down, and she was crowned with a delicate tiara that caught the light with mesmerizing sparkles. Violet smiled warmly, and Vickie felt herself wanting to trust this woman despite her reservations.

“Thank you,” said Violet. “Now, I want you to be reassured this is a night of wonderment and a chance for you to talk to people who were once in your life.”

This sounds familiar, thought Vickie. She wasn’t sure she could stomach another performance of pretending to communicate with the dead. She glanced at Ruby, who looked rather taken by what Violet was saying. Vickie swallowed hard. Perhaps she should’ve been adamant in stopping Ruby from coming. She had a bad feeling that Ruby had her own reasons for coming tonight that she didn’t know about.

“Please, I ask you to be silent during the process of connection at the start. I’ll be creating a safe place for only friendly spirits to come and join us and talk to you.” Her voice was soft and lulling, and Vickie found herself relaxing and beginning to believe this woman. She reminded herself that this was fake and not real, that there was no way that it was nothing more than a performance, an award-winning performance at that.

“All you need to do is enjoy the messages that come to you through me. I’ll be doing all the work of connecting and communicating with the spirits.”

Violet signaled with her hand.

Otto came forward and placed a board in the middle of the low table they were all sitting around. Vickie smothered a gasp as she realized what sort of board it was. She shivered, suddenly feeling very vulnerable and unsafe. This wasn’t what she’d come for at all as she stared at the old-looking Ouija board.

What have I got myself into? She swallowed hard. More importantly, what had she’d gotten Ruby into?

Chapter 12

“Take the person’s hand next to you,” instructed Violet.

Vickie held Ruby’s hand to her right, the warmth of her friend unable to ease the worry building inside of her. She exhaled and took Bessie’s to her left. Bessie shifted on the pillow, her face alight with both excitement and uncertainty.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of a séance,” said Bessie.

“Me, too,” added Ruby in a deep voice.

Vickie pursed her lips tight. She didn’t want to be part of anything like this but had no choice. She had to go through with it if she wanted to expose the Black Hearts Club’s deception on unwitting people.

Vickie stared at the board, trying to see if there were hidden strings or magnets or something she could expose for it being fake and nothing but a trick. The board was made out of old rosewood with a moon on the top right and a sun on the top left, the alphabet written in sans script in an arc, and then numbers. Off-center were the words ‘goodbye.’ Another planchette made of rosewood was to the side, a small circle hole at the at the point it’s heart-shape.

The lights dulled around them, and Vickie shivered in the darkness, feeling as if it was pressing down on her. Otto brought a single white candle and put it next to the board. The flame flickered, casting its light in a dancing motion as if it had no worry in the world.

“Close your eyes for a moment.” Violet’s voice softened. “Breathe in slowly, then out.” Her musical tone began to lull Vickie into feeling safe and secure.

“We’re ready. Spirits, see your loved ones here. They are waiting for your messages of love.”

Violet paused before continuing, “Please open your eyes. I want each of you to place a finger on the planchette.”

Vickie could barely hear her speak as she let her eyelids flutter open. Hesitantly, she leaned forward and placed a finger on the planchette along with everyone else.

“Come, friendly spirits, and speak to your loved ones.”

Violet focused on the board. The planchette began to wriggle into action.

Someone gasped in the room, and Violet frowned, making a shish noise. Everyone hushed.

“Are you here, friendly spirit, to talk to someone present tonight.”

The planchette moved over to the word ‘yes’ near the sun.

“Thank you,” said Violet. “Ladies and gents, we’ve made the connection. You can all sit back and watch the message form.”

Grateful, Vickie settled back on the pillow keeping her focus on the board, trying to work out how it was moving. She knew she hadn’t been pushing it, but surely one of the others in the group had been. Vickie wanted to pick up the innocent-looking planchette and take a closer look to see if there were any hidden mechanics. She resisted the temptation, more curious to see what was going to happen next.

“What’s your name?”
