The piece of wood shimmered back into action, skirting across the top of the board and started spelling out the name of the spirit.

Vickie felt the blood drain from her face and her head spin as the letters were marked.

M.I.G.U.E.L.

Ruby gasped, her hand moved to her throat, her face pale as she stared at the board.

“I take that Miguel is here for you then,” said Violet.

Ruby nodded. Vickie put a hand on her shoulder to help steady her friend.

I knew I should’ve come alone, she thought to herself. This was upsetting Ruby way too much for her liking.

“What’s your message, Miguel?” Violet sat unmoving on the pillow, her face relaxed as if this was nothing out of the ordinary.

A chill went through the group as the message spelled out.

“I miss you, darling, r…”

Violet felt her blood turn cold as she stared at the piece which then moved to the letter ‘u.’ Their cover was about to be blown. She looked at Ruby who looked like she’d literally seen a ghost.

Vickie had to do something quickly. Her breath quickened, she swayed, and then pretended to faint, conveniently knocking the board, sending the planchette flying into the lap of Walter. She collapsed in Ruby’s lap with a heavy moan, closing her eyes and ignoring the noises of surprise and the flutter of panic as the candle tipped setting a pillow on fire. There was a lot of commotion, and she forced herself to keep her eyes closed, resisting the urge to peek and see what was really going on.

“Vickie, Vickie, wake up.” Ruby’s voice was gruff as she shook her.

“Wh… what happened?” Vickie put her hand to her forehead and let her eyes flutter between opened and closed.

“You fainted,” said Violet abruptly, looking unimpressed.

“Oh, dear, are you all right?” asked Bessie, rushing over to her. “It must’ve been way too much for you.”

“I… I think so.” Vickie deliberately swayed as she tried to sit up.

“She needs some water,” said the other woman.

“Otto,” called out Violet. “Please help these two to somewhere private where they can recover.”

Otto quickly appeared and helped Vickie to her feet. “This way.” He guided them back down the stairs.

Vickie glanced back, not really wanting to leave the group.

Violet gave her a dark stare before turning away and speaking to the group. “All isn’t lost. We can continue if you desire,” she said.

“Yes, please,” said Bessie, her agreement echoed with the others in the group.

Vickie didn’t want to miss out on exposing the trick with her own performance seeming to have been convincing enough. However, she had no choice but to allow Otto and Ruby to help her down the stairs and into a small room to the side where a couch and a few lounge chairs with a table to one side were placed about. It made her sick to her stomach to see these people be taken advantage of, and that right now, she couldn’t do anything about it.

“I’ll get some water,” said Otto after helping Vickie lay on the couch.

“Thank you,” answered Vickie.

“What are you trying to do,” hissed Ruby, crossing her arms as she stood over Vickie.

“Stop you from getting exposed, and us kicked out of the group.”

“You could’ve thought of a different way.”

“There wasn’t time. Your name was being spelled out.”
