Ruby did have a point. Yet, still, Vickie wasn’t convinced.

“I don’t know, Ruby. I don’t trust them. Maybe they found out about Miguel from someone else?”

“No one knew about us getting married.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes. Very certain.”

Vickie could see how Ruby would think this. There was enough doubt to believe it. This, along with the grief of her lost love, no wonder Ruby believed and was willing to give them money simply for the chance to speak to Miguel again. Her heart broke, feeling her friend’s pain. Could it be true? She just couldn’t believe it but knew that any further questioning would be too hard for Ruby.

A knock on the door set Vickie on edge. Was the séance over already? Or maybe Violet had a change of heart, and they could return to the night’s entertainment.

“How are you feeling, Vickie?” asked Violet soothingly as she strode into the room, letting the door swung shut behind her.

“Much better, I could re-join the group now,” said Vickie.

“Unfortunately, tonight’s events are finished.”

“So soon?”

“It was never going to be a long night, even with your dramatic interruption.”

Vickie ignored the pain of guilt she felt. She wasn’t the one being fake here.

“We’ll go now,” said Vickie, swinging her legs off the couch and getting ready to stand.

Violet looked sternly at Ruby. “I know you’re not George.” Her voice was barely audible but soft.

Vickie’s eyes widened. Her mind raced, putting together the events of the last two nights, trying to determine what Violet was really up to.

“It was really Miguel coming to speak to me?” asked Ruby.

“Of course, he was.”

“No, he wasn’t,” interrupted Vickie, then immediately regretted saying such harsh words to her friend when she was feeling emotional.

Violet glared at Vickie. “You thought you could trick me?”

Vickie shook her head. “No.” It was the truth. “How would I know you were going to do this tonight? Besides, I don’t believe in this mumbo-jumbo nonsense. I’m into the sciences like my husband, so why would you want the likes of us here?”

“You, Private Investigator Wenderlen, have an excellent skill in finding out information, and I’m in the business of needing information.”

Vickie narrowed her eyes at Violet. She didn’t like where this was going.

“What do you mean?”

“You might not remember. You’ve had so many cases of late.”

A sinking feeling within Vickie intensified.

“Mark’s young pregnant wife, Maud.”

Vickie’s mind raced, turning over the name. She hadn’t recognized the woman, though she did look familiar.

“Her hair used to be lighter.”

Vickie’s jaw dropped.
