“See, that’s why I’d like to employ your services.”

“Vickie, what’s she saying?” asked Ruby.

Vickie’s mouth dried, and she couldn’t find her voice.

“Vickie had a client a few weeks back, Maud, who was worried about her husband cheating on her. Vickie’s research was so thorough, there was plenty of information we could use to convince them that Janette was in the room. They paid well for it, too, to the Black Hearts Club, that is.”

“How did you get hold of my report?” demanded Vickie. She felt sick at the thought that her research had caused a couple to part with their money to someone fraudulent like Violet.

“Easy break-in.”

“I didn’t have any break-ins,” said Vickie cautiously, thinking quickly.

“The report you gave to them. It was easy pickings to steal it from their house than yours.”

Vickie decided she was going to go home and shred her previous case files, knowing now that the notes she kept could be used against her clients if they fell into the wrong hands.

“And how did you know about Miguel?” demanded Ruby. “Even Vickie didn’t know about him.”

“But Otto did.” Violet paused. “I’m sorry, but unlike Miguel, Otto came back alive.”

Ruby made a whimpering sound as if she’d been physically hurt.

“Miguel told Otto on several occasions about his love, Ruby, and the wedding they were going to have.”

“How could you use Ruby like that?” said Vickie, feeling her anger begin to rise. She was going to put an end to this club.

“To show you what you could be part of.”

“Well, you haven’t done your research very well. I don’t want to be a part of this.”

Violet took out something from her pocket and held it up. “Tonight’s takings.”

Vickie’s mouth dropped. It was a very thick wad of notes that Violet was holding up. This wasn’t right. How dare they take advantage of people’s emotions to make money.

“Got your interest now,” said Violet smugly.

“You most certainly have, and you’re going to give every dollar back to the people you’ve stolen it from.” With a high kick, Vickie knocked the wad of money from Violet’s hand.

“You’ll regret this,” yelled Violet.

“Not likely.” With a swift movement, Vickie twisted Violet’s arm behind her, bringing her to her knees.

“You should’ve done your research. I’m into helping people, not making money,” said Vickie. She tore a section of material from her dress and quickly tied up Violet.

“There’s no proof I’ve done anything wrong.” Violet struggled against the restraints.

“We will see about that.”

The door flung open, and Otto and the presenter came in.

“How could you betray Miguel like that,” yelled Ruby. She burst with a fury Vickie had never seen and sucker-punched him, knocking him to the floor.

The presenter tried to run away. “No, you don’t,” yelled Vickie, and she tackled him to the floor, kneeing him in the groin, stopping him from going anywhere.

Emma poked her head in, and in a quick-thinking action, Vickie grabbed the blanket and threw it over her, leaving her stumbling over the others on the floor.

“Quick,” yelled Vickie to Ruby as she rushed to the door.
