“We can’t leave them here,” answered Ruby.

“We aren’t. Come on.”

Vickie stood by the door, and once Ruby was through, quickly shut it and leaned hard against it. Ruby jumped into action and came back with a length of wood she’d ripped off something and jimmied the handle, locking the members of the Black Hearts inside.

“Well done, Ruby,” said Vickie as she stepped back, puffing hard from the adrenaline coursing through her. “I’ll go call the police.”

She looked over to see Ruby collapsed on the floor crying.

“Ruby.” She rushed over to Ruby and embraced her. “I wish Miguel had come back, and I’m so sorry they used you to get to me.”

Ruby sobbed, years of grief finally being released.

“I hope you’ll forgive me.”

Ruby shook her head. “I should’ve told you, I should…” She sobbed harder.

“No, you’ve done nothing wrong.”

“Nor have you.” Ruby hugged Vickie back.

Guilt pricked the back of Vickie’s eyes. She had. She hadn’t been completely honest with George, and she needed to set that right.

“Thanks for helping me back there, you’re pretty good in a fight,” said Vickie.

Ruby tried to grin through the tears. “I wouldn’t miss all of this for the world.”

“Oh, Ruby, you’re the best friend.” She hugged Ruby tighter. She needed to call the police, and the Black Hearts Club members could finally be put behind bars where they belonged. First, she’d comfort Ruby, glad she had a friend who had her back.

Chapter 13

“Ican’t find my suit, Vickie,” said George as he walked into the dining room, slamming the morning newspaper on the table.

“What suit?” She swallowed hard. She knew what suit—the one Ruby had worn pretending to be her husband and had donated to charity. She put down the cup of tea next to the breakfast of scrambled eggs in front of her, pushing away the exhaustion she felt.

“The pinstriped one. Do you know where it might’ve gotten to?”

“No.”

“I know when you’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Vickie, what happened to your dress?” She scrunched up her dress so he wouldn’t see the tear. It had taken most of the night answering the questions the police had and then settling Ruby before she made it home in the morning.

“Nothing.”

“Vickie Wenderlen, where’s my suit! And while you’re at it, tell me what you’ve really been up to these last few days.”

Vickie sighed. She had to say something. She had been hoping to have a bit longer to formulate how to break this to her husband.

“The truth.”

She looked at George, who appeared very concerned.

“We’ve agreed to be honest with each other, and I have been. But I get the feeling that you haven’t. I mean, what made you even think that I ever had an inclination toward men and this Miguel? This is all rather suspicious, Vickie.”

Vickie rolled her lips together in thought.
