Tamaska’s hand fluttered to her throat as Olcan’s wolf bit down hard on Cory’s arm.

But Cory punched and twisted his fist, right into the bleeding wound on the wolf.

He howled, a terrible sound that shook her to the core.

Olcan retreated, and she took the opening and jumped into the fray, hitting and kicking at Cory, the pain in her arm almost debilitating. She ignored it. Instead, she focused in on protecting the injured Olcan.

A few well-aimed punches collided with Cory’s face. Before he could recover, she kicked him hard in the guts, unbalancing him and sending him toppling backwards.

But Cory didn’t stay down long. The vampire leapt up and punched her hard. Pain exploded in her jaw and rocketed through her body.

She raised her arms to block Cory’s punches, but the force of his attack sent her stumbling, almost to her knees.

Kodiak was right. She didn’t have enough training to go up against a vampire. Her heart hammered hard.

Cory wasn’t going to kill her; she was somehow important to Amdis. So weak or not, she’d keep fighting. She attacked.

Olcan lunged forward, snapping, but he was too slow. Cory easily moved out of the way and managed to kick Olcan hard in his face and then his wound, knocking him to the ground. This time, he didn’t get up.

“No!” She turned and, pulse accelerating as anger burst through her, she lunged at Cory, letting loose with her anger and pain and fear.

She didn’t care about her wound. She only cared about taking him down, destroying him for hurting the injured wolf.

Tamaska managed to get in a few punches and kicks before he punched her back, hitting her in the face and sending her tumbling to the floor. She landed hard on her ass.

She looked up at Cory. The smug expression on his face turned her stomach.

He stepped towards her. “I don’t care how hard you make it. Just give me an excuse to drink your blood, and I’ll do it.”

“You can’t do that, and we both know it.” Tamaska’s blood rushed hard and fast as a new wave of adrenaline surged. She shimmied backwards along the floor, pedaling her legs frantically to make herself move faster.

She glanced at Olcan’s wolf, who lay unmoving on the floor. It made her sick to her stomach, knowing he’d been injured while protecting her.

Please get up. Please. But the wolf remained still.

Cory started to reach for her when something slammed into his side, pushing him to the floor.

Tamaska stifled a scream. Kodiak.

He loomed, big, powerful. And he growled as he attacked the vampire, sinking sharp teeth into its flesh.

Ash quickly joined the fight, and together Ash and Kodiak took turns attacking. They also distracted Cory so one could get in a sharp bite or a skin-tearing scratch. They worked without any obvious communication, as if they knew what the other needed and thought.

Tamaska crawled to where Olcan lay and gently rested her hand on the wolf.

She nearly gasped with surprise. As soon as she touched the wolf, it was as if she’d joined minds with him.

She couldn’t hear what he said, but she somehow knew he didn’t want her to go.

But his injuries: Bone showed white in the red of blood and fur and flesh. His injuries… He needed help or they would be fatal.

She looked up, but the battle raged. Maybe there was a first aid kit, or she could get one of the other shifters to help. What was the use of her “don’t kill” sign, placed by the vampires. if she couldn’t help this wolf?

Tamaska moved to find help, but Olcan seemed to have a hold on her. She stayed put, her hand on the fur just behind his ears, petting him slowly, her phobia nowhere to be seen.

She stroked the fatally injured wolf, trying to be as gentle and calming as she could, even as her throat burned from holding back tears. She prayed to whatever forces were out there that he’d make it.

But Olcan’s remaining strength slipped away, and he could barely move. He lay pressed against her as she tried to give him peace, calm, and life through the connection of touch.
