Bunching her muscles, she prepared to dash around the table, going through him if she had to, but Cory moved, too. He leapt onto the table, swiping at her as he hissed, baring fangs.

Tamaska recoiled, and a scream broke free before she could slap a hand over her mouth. Every second that passed, diminished her chances of getting out of that room or ever seeing the light of day again.

But she wasn’t about to give up.

“What, don’t you like my new fangs?” asked Cory, a dark glint reflecting in his eyes.

“No.”

Cory hissed to show off the fangs again. This time she managed not to flinch at the long, sharp, unnatural incisors.

“I got them because of you.” Cory smirked as he crouched on the top of the altar, looking down at her, his hands loose like he had all the time in the world.

Like there wasn’t a way out for her.

Like he had all the power.

She needed to think, find a way out, buy a little time before she made another run for it.

Tamaska frowned. “Me?”

“All the hard work I did, giving Amdis information about you,” he said, clearly enjoying the story.

“You spied on me.” She started back around the table, but Cory matched her movements, keeping her trapped.

“Yes, I did. So they could change me.”

“You changed?” What the fuck did he mean? Clearly, he wasn’t human anymore, but she figured he’d never been human in the first place.

Was that true, too? The myths that vampires could be made?

“Oh, that’s right, you’re still catching up on this whole supernatural thing.” He leaned closer to her. “When I helped them get the Blood Opal, it impressed them so much that they changed me into a vampire.”

Tamaska’s stomach turned at the thought. Cory hadwantedto be a vampire, and he’d facilitated the entire theft of the Blood Opal. He had been her assistant, the one person who was supposed to support her and keep the gem safe. At least she knew now who had leaked secure information—not Shadow Security, but her assistant.

“You fucking bastard,” she said. “Why did you even want Shadow Security at the event?”

“It’s a vampire and wolf thing.” Cory shrugged. “We wanted to make life harder for the wolves, and this was the start.”

I have to warn Kodiak.

Her mind rolled through the very limited number of options for her escape. If only she had a weapon, or anything more than the self-defense lessons she’d taken.

Cory was fast and instinct told her he was probably stronger than he looked. She needed something, the element of surprise…

It made her sick that Kodiak had been right. He hadn’t been responsible for the theft at all. Her mind reeled at the lies Cory had woven, all for the sake of becoming a vampire.

“So what is the plan with them?”

“Destroy them. The usual,” he smirked.

She looked at him. “And you? How long have you been one of these…creatures?”

“It’s only been a few days now, but I’m adapting quickly. I was born to be a vampire.” Cory laughed.

“You’re born to die,” said Tamaska as she stepped back, a plan forming in her mind.

Cory hissed. He lurched forward, and Tamaska waited until he was in the air before she jumped forward.
