Cory yelped at the sound and tried to hurry, tugging harder on her as Kodiak neared.

“She’s ours now, dog,” said Cory.

“Like fucking hell, I am!” Tamaska’s hand formed a fist and she hit the vampire.

Momentarily stunned, he let her go.

She pulled free of Cory’s grip. Instead of running, she perfectly jump-kicked his belly, then followed with a roundhouse and a hefty punch to the face.

Fuck. For a human, she could fight.

Cory doubled over, winded from Tamaska’s attack. Kodiak took that advantage and prepared to leap into the air. But before he could become airborne, something hard hit him on the side. He whimpered in pain, stumbling to the ground and losing his momentum.

He struggled to get up and managed to do so just in time for a vampire to jump at him, knife in hand. Where had these fucking vampires been hiding?

Forced onto the defensive, he rolled to the side as the tip of the knife slashing his skin. That was one more scratch than he wanted to get, and his rage returned as his wolf leapt to the forefront.

All vampires deserved to die, and fuck it, he was going to start right now.

Changing direction, he twisted and sprung into the air before landing on the vampire and knocking the knife away. They struggled briefly before his teeth latched onto the vampire’s neck. Kodiak ripped out its throat in one quick pull, ending the scuffle.

He leapt up. Tamaska still fought Cory.

Where had she found such strength? He could’ve sworn she had some supernatural ability—considering the way she hadn’t given up and how well she could defend herself, unarmed, from a vampire.

But he didn’t have time to think about it.

Kodiak surged forward, the pain in his hip ripping into him. He growled, low and deep, slowly letting the sound rumble louder as he approached Cory. He was going to fucking make Cory pay for trying to take his woman.

The vampire half turned to him, and Tamaska sent a series of kicks towards Cory, most of them landing. Cory half caught her leg and she slipped. Kodiak quickly dove forward to prevent Cory from lashing out at her. Instead of attacking, Cory fled.

Kodiak growled loudly, his fur standing on end. Frustration clogged in his throat at the disappearing vampire.

In any other circumstances he’d be after the fucker, but right now, he didn’t dare, not with Tamaska here, and not with an unknown number of vampires possibly lurking nearby. He wasn’t going to get the final kill now that Cory had fled. He spun around, half expecting to see an army of vampires behind him, but there weren’t any more. His instincts couldn’t detect any. His wolf side began to settle.

He started to approach Tamaska, needing to make sure she was all right and let her know they should get out before any more vampires came for them.

Her eyes widened as her face paled. He could smell her fear that emanated strongly, along with sensing the rapid increase of her pulse.

Jesus, was her fear of canines so deep she saw him as a bigger threat than the fucking vampires who’d killed her friend? Attacked her? How the hell could he protect someone who both feared and hated him?

Slowly he changed back to human form. It was a start, even if he was naked in front her again.

She seemed to relax the moment he did so. “Keep an eye out,” he said, stripping the black trousers from the dead vampire.

He didn’t particularly want something of theirs against his skin, but he didn’t have an option. He couldn’t exactly walk out of the place stark naked.

Kodiak yanked them on as he glanced at her.

Tamaska’s gaze jerked away from his junk. “There’s…I don’t think there are more.”

He wanted to contradict her, but he guessed she was hanging on by a thread. She was strong, yes, but humans were only so strong, and she’d had a series of horrifying shocks in a short amount of time.

It was a wonder she wasn’t curled into a fetal ball on the floor.

“Can you run?” he asked. “We have to get out of here.”

Tamaska nodded, her face still pale. Fear and something darker, hotter, that called to him glimmered in her eyes as she gazed at him.
