The vampire ignored him and dragged her up, feet lifting from the ground.

Tamaska struggled hard, kicking at him, but he easily avoided the attacks. He smirked at her attempts to hurt him.

Rage exploded within Kodiak. In an instant, he released his inner wolf, allowing it free rein for the attack.

He pounced on the vampire holding Tamaska’s neck, ripping him from her. She gasped for breath, coughing, but he didn’t dare look. Instead, he kept his eyes on the target, ready to kill.

The vampire turned and hissed. Kodiak swiped a paw at him, claws extended. The sharp tips dragged over the vampire’s skin, leaving three deep, red marks.

Kodiak growled low, ready to lunge at his prey. The vampire spun, springing out of the way and forcing Kodiak to chase him.

I’ll still get you, even if you run. Kodiak paused as the vampire raced around the altar. Kodiak measured his leap perfectly. His paws landed on the vampire’s chest, pushing him down onto the table with a sickening thud. The vampire’s head snapped back, leaving his neck exposed.

Kodiak’s teeth sank in hard and deep, gripping muscle, before he shook sharply. The sickening snap of the vampire’s neck breaking filled the room. Using his teeth and claws, he tore apart the creature, not wanting to give it a chance to attack his woman again.

The more the blood splattered, the more his rage cooled. When he was sure the vampire was dead, he turned.

The bottom fell from his world.

In his haste to save her, to take out the monster who’d tried to hurt her, he’d forgotten Cory.

They were gone.

Cory and Tamaska were gone.

With a chilling growl, he raced upstairs.

He’d save her, if it was the last thing he ever did.

Kodiak

Kodiak burstthrough the door at the top of the stairs, his wolf senses tracking Tamaska’s fresh scent.

His sharp eyes took in every detail in the dim light of the dance area, searching for movement, something.

For a sickening moment, he thought he was too late, that he’d failed to protect Tamaska.

Then he saw something. A moving shadow. His gaze swung to it as he stood still, waiting.

Cory. He dragged a struggling, fighting Tamaska from behind the stage. She tried to wrench free, but the vampire was too strong.

Kodiak vaulted towards them, his paws light on the wooden dance floor. His senses nearly overloaded at the smell of blood that had soaked into the floor over the years.

Focused on her, on filling his lungs with her, he closed the gap between them while using his peripheral vision to ensure there were no other vampires.

He couldn’t afford to be blindsided by another attack, because next time he was sure he’d lose her. The situation could get tricky. If there were more vampires, they could easily overwhelm him and take her when he was distracted—again.

I won’t let that happen. Eyes on the prize.

“Let me go!” Her gaze clashed with his. “Kodiak, please help…”

Her words were a burst of adrenaline, and he held himself back.

Easy does it… He needed to keep the wolf in check, almost impossible in this form. Almost, but not completely.

He rounded on Cory and Tamaska and bared his teeth, emitting a low, warning growl.
