Dragging in a breath, she steadied herself. Lust was one thing, good sex turned people into idiots, she knew that. Just like she knew good sex didn’t last…not that mind-melting, euphoric feeling that wiped away common sense.

It didn’t matter that the desire inside her that Kodiak brought to life wasn’t like anything she’d ever experienced before, and the sex got better each time, like a bond grew.

None of it mattered.

What worried her right in that moment, apart from Kodiak not being there and his side of the bed cold, was how she’d found her clothes.

Not just the clothes. She pulled them on. And luck would have been her putting her hand down and finding them. Memory would have meant her seeing and knowing where the clothes ended up. Exactly.

She’d seen them.

Just like she’d been able to see in the nightclub better than she should. Just like she could see in the dark when they’d walked to the hut.

And just like how her hearing had seemed to improve.

It worried her. Bone deep.

After dressing, she moved quietly out of the room, hoping Kodiak would be there to greet her. Even though the place had that aura of emptiness, like whoever had been there had left a while ago, maybe she was wrong. Maybe he watched something on the TV with the sound down.

“Yeah, and the screen off,” she said softly.

Or maybe he read a book on the couch. He could see in the dark, right?

Horror shot through her.

What if sex with him was turning her into some kind of hybrid?

But the moment that thought popped into her head, she dismissed it. Absurd to the nth degree.

She put her hand on the handle and opened the door and stepped inside.

The small living room was empty.

The place wasn’t big, and he wasn’t here. He’d… Her heart slammed against her ribs as her stomach turned cold and heavy. He’d left her?

Through the cold an anger started to build, along with a fear that lanced her.

He’d left her, or something had happened.

In the dark, she looked around, not wanting to turn on a light, not wanting to call attention to herself if vampires or other dangers were lurking, waiting…

Nothing seemed out of turn. No signs of a fight and the front door was shut.

Besides, just say something big enough and strong enough had taken down Kodiak, no way would she have slept through it. No way would she be standing here, now. In one piece.

She’d witnessed his strength. Seen him fight off vampires. He was big and strong and powerful. It would take a lot to bring him down.

She would have heard that.

So it left one thing.

He’d taken her here under false pretenses and locked her up, locked her away, to supposedly keep her safe and then gone off.

Tamaska sighed heavily. Was it really safe to stay there? Alone?

She’d felt protected with Kodiak by her side, but now that he was gone, how the hell could she be safe?

What about food? What if something did come for her?
