He said state-of-the-art security or similar, but even that wasn’t infallible.

Maybe he had a way of being notified if someone or something tried to get in, but what if he couldn’t get here in time?

And…

She swallowed.

He was a dog. A wolf. A thing not to ever be trusted, right?

After all, it hadn’t been that long ago when she’d vowed never to trust him again because she’d seen him turn into a wolf. Yet, there she was, wanting to try to build trust between them.

And of course, she couldn’t keep her hands off his hot, toned body.

But he’d betrayed that. Left her. To do…what?

That’s what she didn’t get. Oh, she understood him wanting to keep her safe, but tucking her away on her own wasn’t that. And Kodiak didn’t strike her as that kind of man.

Or was she just trying to talk her way into finding a reason? It was as if there were a greater force pushing her to be with him.

A part of her didn’t want to resist him, didn’t want to leave. A crazy, stupid part wanted to believe in things like destiny, wanted to be with him and call it fate.

Some fate, she decided. Twisted, dark, and destined to fail. Surely.

Tamaska went to the window and moved the curtain to gaze outside. Immediately, she saw his car and breathed out heavily.

That was good. Kodiak might not have been in the hut, but he hadn’t completely left her.

So, where the fuck was he?

She continued to peer out the window. The hut was surrounded by thick bushland, only broken by the track leading to the long driveway and the main road.

The quiet caused her pulse to quicken. She was used to city life, the busyness and the constant noise. Here, nothing seemed to be happening, and it unnerved her.

Where was he?

All she wanted to do was get away from there and back into the city. But that wasn’t an option, and short of her stealing his car, she couldn’t. Besides, it didn’t make sense. Her best friend had been killed, she’d fought for her life against her workmate, and there was no way she could put her parents or friends in danger by fleeing to them.

And vampires. They were out there. It wasn’t just that her life was in danger and her friend had been killed. It was because of vampires.

That made it all worse.

Tamaska glanced at the car again. What if he’d had another vehicle? What—

She stopped. She was turning in circles, making herself crazy.

Fact was, she couldn’t go anywhere without putting her loved ones in danger. She’d have to stay put and hope Kodiak would return soon from wherever he decided to go. What could possibly be more important than staying with her, after all that had happened?

They were in this Blood Opal mess together.

When—if—when he got back, he’d be doing some explaining. You didn’t leave a woman this way. Even if you intended to return. Oh, yeah, did he owe her an explanation. Tamaska would hold him to that.

The intensity of the last few hours had left her exhausted, but somehow the intimate time with Kodiak and the deep sleep afterward had rejuvenated her to a degree. But the crazy thoughts kept coming. Some decent food would hopefully calm those and help her feel more like herself.

If there was any food here, she amended.

Still, there was only one way to find out.

As she prepared to turn from the window, a movement in the bushes caught her attention. Her breath caught as a large dog trotted into the open space in front of the hut.
